A place to start + some questions reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- katzenversteher · 2021-04-17 12:09 Can you recommend a BBS that's still active, newbie friendly and has (at least a few) German users? I was born in the 1980s in Germany but somehow completely missed BBSs. I knew they existed from Amiga game cracktros but never used them. My father had BTX and after that we switched to T-Online internet. I was never a big fan of online forums (except for one) but liked the usenet a lot. Especially in Germany we had a pretty strict netiquette with clear names etc on the usenet and from what I've read this is similar for FIDO, right? I don't even really understand what FIDO is but maybe someone can clarify this a bit for me (what FIDO and the guidelines mean in the real world). Thank you :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2021-04-17 14:34 My database has a LOT of German BBSes, MUDs, etc listed: [https://www.ipingthereforeiam.com/bbs/](https://www.ipingthereforeiam .com/bbs/) What is Fidonet?: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FidoNet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ FidoNet) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2021-04-17 17:46 Lots of German BBSes are at the Telnet BBS Guide - [https://telnetbbsguide.com](https://telnetbbsguide.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- katzenversteher · 2021-04-18 13:00 Yes but I was looking for one that's actively used ---------------------------------------------------------------------- katzenversteher · 2021-04-18 17:46 Do you know anything about the clear net policy of fidonet or on BBSs in general? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2021-04-18 18:05 BBS sysops set the policies for their own boards. Fidonet, as most networks, have numerous policies governing network operations. Echomail areas usually have their own policies as well. Google is your friend. Many Fidonet documents can be found here: [https://www.ipingthereforeiam.com/bbs/files/fidonet/](https://www.ipi ngthereforeiam.com/bbs/files/fidonet/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-04-18 21:32 May I be as bold as to offer up the documentary series on BBSing in 2021, called Back To The BBS. Part one is a general overview of BBSes, where to find them, how to use them etc. Part three covers messaging eg fidonet. Hope you find the documentary helpful and entertaining, if you do, please share with your friends! https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLop3s1hMlSJKXqmuFjK7gbJh2WAyllTTY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- katzenversteher · 2021-04-19 04:10 Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- katzenversteher · 2021-04-19 04:11 Thank you, I watched part 1 so far.
