I know this is probably asked a lot but what is the most popular BBS? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-02-28 02:59 Are you talking about bbs software or actual bbs to connect to? The IPTIA BBS listing has a top 10 if the latter, although it's difficult to say how accurate that is. If the former, the telnet bbs guide lists all the bbses and the software they use. Mystic is #1, followed pretty closely by Synchronet. In any case, all of this is subjective and popular doesn't always mean best. Choose something based on your own desires for best mileage. My next episode of the bbs documentary covers bbs software comprehensively, hope you enjoy that! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2021-02-28 04:39 I run the IPTIA site, and the popularity voting system seems to have mostly attracted sysops to come and vote for their own board :-/ I really wish sysops would send their users by to vote more. As for the most popular software, we have 455 Synchronet systems and 359 Mystic systems in the database. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2021-02-28 12:35 As far as active systems (meaning up and operational, not DOA) on the Telnet BBS Guide, as of Sunday 2/28/21 we have 285 Synchronet systems and 234 Mystic systems. There's more in the database but not counting those who are down at the moment. As far as running your own BBS, check out which ones you like to run, play with them, and choose which one(s) you like. Some sysops run more than one kind of software. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SpitfireTN · 2021-02-28 14:08 I will agree that Mystic and Synchronet are the top two. Everyone has a PC and they are so easy to set up. Now if your looking for rare. Look at some of the Commodore boards that are up. There is a good list of them at [Commodore BBS Outpost (cbbsoutpost.servebbs.com)](http://cbbsoutpost.servebbs.com/) There are some that you will only find 1 or two still active in the world. Even some of these rare boards are still in development. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mycall · 2021-02-28 15:41 PCBoard? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2021-02-28 16:33 Only 7 of them on the Telnet BBS Guide. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mycall · 2021-02-28 16:56 Oh, you mean now. Back in the 80s, it was everywhere. My favorite is still Vision/X ---------------------------------------------------------------------- richorr70 · 2021-02-28 19:31 It would be better to build a plug-in for the board to get stats versus ask users to do something else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2021-02-28 19:52 Could you write a "plugin" that runs on every type of BBS software? If not, those with a plugin would have an advantage, yes? If users won't go to a website to vote, maybe they don't feel strongly enough for that vote to mean anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- richorr70 · 2021-02-28 21:34 I still want to setup a Searchlight board ---------------------------------------------------------------------- richorr70 · 2021-02-28 21:39 That’s kinda the point. It’s motivating to have the plug-in at that point and the onus is on the sysop where it should be, not the users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- richorr70 · 2021-02-28 21:40 And it doesn’t have to be standard single plug-in, it could be cross board. Heck I could build one in for Pyroto even off of the event log. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dcpanthersfan · 2021-03-01 00:23 Can confirm. I run the only Supra 128 BBS still in operation. tfcbbs.com:6400 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SpitfireTN · 2021-03-01 00:29 I think I called it. I run one of 3 C-Net64 boards and 1 of 2 C-Net 128 boards. Http://Facebook.com/groups/rofbbs It's those rare boards that arouse callers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulLee420 · 2021-03-18 02:16 I think that 2o fOr beeRS is the best Bbs out right now. For many reasons, one being that it’s servers are in my home office. 20ForBeers.com:1337 Another reason is because I just added 3TB of ROMs, but that’s just today... give us a buzz. I like ENiGMA.5 for Bbs software and aBSINTHE is my favorite Bbs ever. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XediDC · 2021-03-31 10:52 I still login to my old pcboard locally every few years.... feels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2021-04-09 15:13 Celerity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xbit_bbs · 2021-04-12 23:15 It shows mystic 214 vs. sync's 272. Or am i reading that incorrectly? No matter, you're 100% correct in how to choose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-04-12 23:25 Last time I looked on telnet bbs guide , mystic had the lead by a very small margin, however this changes from month to month. Both are excellent packages and both are very easy to set up with a stock configuration, so play with both of you like, just to get a feel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xbit_bbs · 2021-04-12 23:35 Well stated. Heck, I'm having the most fun w/ my new Spitfire BBS software that I jut got going via telnet :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulLee420 · 2021-04-12 23:57 Checkout 2o’s brand new Facebook hack leak... it just went up because Mark won’t tell the users about a breach of 533M accounts. Well... WE WILL. 20ForBeers.com:1337 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-04-12 23:57 Btw I am releasing back to the bbs part 4 this week. It covers bbs software, so you may want to watch that! Great interviews with the authors of some of the best software out there including Enigma 1/2, Synchronet and Image 3.0!
