Returning to BBS reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wetgoldfish43 · 2021-02-14 12:24 After running a BBS for 3 years in the 90’s I’m looking to return to being a Sysops. What’s the best BBS software to run these days? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CharlieBrown197 · 2021-02-14 13:11 There is no best, really, it depends on how you like to work with them and what you want to do. But two great starting points are Mysitc BBS and Synchronet BBS. Hope this helps! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codefenix · 2021-02-14 15:59 +1 for Synchronet. It's fairly straightforward to customize out of the box, and if you're experienced with writing Javascript code, you can easily modify the stock modules to your liking, or even write your own from scratch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roovis-rcs · 2021-02-14 19:06 Everyone is a SysOp these days. Mystic is great if you liked the Telegard/Renegade style setup. SynchroNet is the other actively maintained BBS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- samalex01 · 2021-02-14 19:14 Agree... Seems there are more sysops now than users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mylittleplaceholder · 2021-02-14 21:04 I want to be a user again. But I used to call homebrew Commodore 64 boards. It'd be fun to see those types of sites again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- richorr70 · 2021-02-14 21:52 So true. I wished we see more homebrew boards like the good old days. The best of the best were custom builds back in the 80s. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wetgoldfish43 · 2021-02-14 22:01 Thanks for the info, yea seems we will need more users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- izzo34 · 2021-02-14 22:09 Just fired up my dos/desqview/wildcat 4.20 multi line 10 the other day and played lord Then I fired up my windows nt 4.0 os and fired up the wildcat 5. Still works great. But nobody ever calls in. I too miss a bbs. I don't need to be a sysop so much. But I would like to at least play lord on one with active people again. Made some cool friends back in the day. It was fun ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oh_nater · 2021-02-15 01:36 Haven't tried it but -- WWIV looks active too. [https://github.com/wwivbbs](https://github.com/wwivbbs) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CharlieBrown197 · 2021-02-15 02:30 WWIV is a great option too, but from what I understand (never tried it either) it requires more configuration before getting a basic BBS online than Mystic or Synchronet. But it is just as capable, if not moreso. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KrUpTi0n · 2021-02-16 00:47 I have 2 game servers on my BBS (doorparty & Combatnet) Combatnet has a active interbbs BRE game going, and the other has LORD. My BBS is 'The Amiga Frontier' ([frontierbbs.net:8888](https://frontierbbs.net:8888)) My other one (The New Frontier \]\[ - [frontierbbs.net:23](https://frontierbbs.net:23)) has other networked doors if you're interested ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PaulLee420 · 2021-02-16 01:43 ENiGMA 1/2 Uses node.js java... Gangster sauce, and you’ll be so l33t. Paulie420 20ForBeers.com:1337 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2021-02-17 09:48 Synchronet for the win, but Mystic is good as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gnu2tux · 2021-02-20 00:28 Mystic, Synchronet and Enigma 1/2 are all great. Look out for Legacy/X, ProBoard and if.you run a C64, Image 3.0 too! All of these systems are being actively maintained now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kamitsuruyoshi · 2021-07-30 13:27 I haven't used anything else than Synchronet, but I don't feel the need to migrate to other software.
