Wizard's Keep BBS? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- craystephenson · 2021-01-26 20:06 Anybody remember a D&D RPG-based adventure game called The Wizard's Keep? It had some popularity in North Texas area during the mid 80's. Would love to find that code. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roaring_abyss · 2021-01-27 02:53 I remember this one! Would love to play it again also. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2021-01-28 03:07 Was this a bbs game? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- craystephenson · 2021-01-28 03:12 When you logged in – if you’re lucky enough to get a ringtone and not a busy tone - then you would get one life per call to play. Basically it was a text-based RPG D&D game. Once you ran out of hit points - the call ended. Primitive but fun. You could choose to travel north south east or west. Eventually run into goblins or whatever and choose to fight or run. I think I paid like five bucks a month to play. Literally mailed a check to some dude’s house. This was in the north Texas area. Played on my C64. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2021-01-28 03:14 Sounds pretty cool. I guess I’m trying to figure out if this was a bbs itself setup this way or a door game. I have quite a few bbs colleagues that I can ask to help locate it if it was a real door game. Let me know and I’ll try to hunt it down. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ratbuddy · 2021-02-01 15:54 Can you ask around for the Pit Fiend's Adventure series? I've been searching for years and as best I can tell, these door games are completely lost. I checked with John Hardman of Social Graces and Rick Rybaczek as well and they had no remaining drives they could check. Here is someone else looking for them 12 years ago http://web.synchro.net/?page=001-forum.ssjs&sub=doorgame&thread=6403 http://protovision.textfiles.com/bbs/ADS/sgonline.lst that's the file list from Social Graces 30 years ago showing some of the games. It's a little sad thinking that all the hours that went into writing and playing these games are simply lost to time. edit: Wow, I think I found the author on linkedin using a response to a post I made 12 years ago that I just saw today. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2021-02-01 19:23 Ok I put the word out. Let’s see what anyone can find. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ratbuddy · 2021-02-01 19:35 I found the original author today, he's offered to look for floppies in his basement - he's sure the source code is on them somewhere, just matter of the disks still working. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2021-02-01 19:42 Dude get back to me if you score it. I archive a ton of vintage BBS files so I can throw it up there. Good thinking. Also, see if you can score the source code too. That’s fun to port into Pascal/C++/Python for a revamped version. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ratbuddy · 2021-02-01 20:11 For sure, I haven't touched Pascal since the 90s. He said they're in Turbo Pascal, 'some 3.0 some 5.0' :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2021-02-01 20:13 Yeah that’s to be expected. TP3-5 is where a lot of the old timer games were written. We like to port them and update them. Thanks for this! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phareous · 2021-02-01 21:30 I'd be glad to install them on my BBS. I'm trying to make as many old doors available as possible (going to take me awhile) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2021-02-04 01:08 Did you score the goods? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ratbuddy · 2021-02-04 09:20 He is looking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2021-03-04 13:49 Hey just checking in again. Any luck with scoring this source code? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ratbuddy · 2021-03-04 14:17 Not yet, I'll double check if he's had time to look. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- douglaskwyatt · 2023-07-10 02:13 I know this is an old thread, but just to add to the record, I played this BBS when I lived in Arlington back in the mid-to-late 80s. And, yeah, I also payed $5 to the dude to get extra time, and I woke up early before school so I could get online (since it only had one phone-line, so it was usually busy). I actually ended up meeting one of the co-sysops at some point (lived in my neighborhood). You could fight other players in town, or you could wander the countryside and fight monsters. I think there were other cities you could get to, and even set up shops there to make money. And I remember the 2nd most powerful monster was Prince Yor's Mom (Prince Yor was one of the other co-sysops).
