archives.thebbs.org problems reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2020-11-30 22:58 I've been going though the [http://archives.thebbs.org/](http://archives.thebbs.org/) and the pages are coming up but if you click on any of the download links nothing happens Anyone else having that same problem? Looks like a found the problem there is no user or password for the FTP site to download the files Anyone got a clue what it might be? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Havrim · 2020-12-01 02:03 Right click the file and "open in a new tab". That always worked for me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2020-12-01 02:04 I did that as well and it asks for an ftp program I'm running win 10 and chrome ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redbrickchimney · 2020-12-01 02:54 anonymous ftp login works ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sembiance · 2020-12-01 03:45 Sounds like you are in the unlucky 50%. Google is removing FTP support from chrome. **Support for FTP links will be disabled for 50% of Chrome 87 users, with a complete removal scheduled for Chrome 88** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2020-12-01 10:02 Try Firefox. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2020-12-02 04:24 Yep I downloaded Firefox and it worked again what on earth are they doing over there at Chrome!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2020-12-02 04:24 That did the trick Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2020-12-02 19:00 Really? For me, left-clicking still does nothing, right-clicking and save-as produces 0-length files, and FTPing to the server fails. I tried multiple browsers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2020-12-02 20:37 I did firefox and did a right mouse click open as new tab and that seemed to work ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2020-12-03 01:09 Did you actually open or save the file? Was it more than zero-length? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2020-12-03 01:26 Save to file and yes its 800k ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2020-12-03 16:31 Weird. If you don't mind, what specific file did you download? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2020-12-03 17:15 Under door games. I downloaded a game called steel and ice hockey I right mouse clicked open in new tab on the link then in the new tab there will be a dialog box asking open with? Or save file as I use save file as. This was in firefox ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-12-04 23:21 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Iron_Slug · 2020-12-04 23:22 Even weirder, it appears to work from some IPs and not others. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anatanitawagoto · 2021-01-11 00:30 anonymous ftp login works ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FrethKindheart · 2022-08-25 01:47 Just an FYI: The site is working. I've downloaded several files so far using Windows XP and Internet Explorer (in a VirtualBox). Once you have the files you want, enable drag/drop bidirectional via the VirtualBox menu and you can copy the files out of the virtual machine. I spent about an hour downloading about 30 files and I didn't have an issue. I was able to download to my heart's content. I did them one at a time. If a person wanted to, they could spend time and go down through the list, downloading the whole list from the website. Yes, that's a lot of clicks, but if done over time, you could have the whole collection. Much of the files, however, are files I don't even want, and would never use. I plan on going through each list and picking out the files I want and call it done. EDIT/ETA: I did reach a point where I was blocked from further downloading, so there is either a download limit or the owner is blocking me. Connecting via an FTP client logs into the upload directory only, so you can only upload files for submission to the collection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2022-08-27 22:53 I found out from the sysop of the BBS Archives I had downloaded too many files in one day as they have a daily limit and I had soft banned myself from the site They are supposedly working on moving everything over to an HTML based system because the the FTP issues Thanks for giving me a heads up ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FrethKindheart · 2022-08-28 00:00 Glad to help. Good to hear it's just a daily limit. It's been over 24 hours, so I should go try it again. It'll be much more convenient when he moves to HTML. It'll be accessible from modern browsers again, since most browsers removed FTP functionality. Regards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedigitalinfinity · 2022-08-28 01:06 this is what is buried in the history section of their site This resulted in changing the download policies of BBS Archives, limiting batch downloads to 15 files within a 12 hour period. I actually use Chrome but I have the FTP link open with IE and then IE opens up and it asked for a login there is a check box in the lower left corner for anonymous login select that check box then click the login button it then should give you a download dialog box That's how I've been able to do it lately ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FrethKindheart · 2022-08-30 11:39 *nods* I just tried it again last night. When I click on a download now it doesn't respond, so I must be blocked. I did download about 50-60 files altogether, so the owner might've noticed and blocked me. No matter. I did find http://www.retroarchive.org in another Reddit post, which has a bunch of torrent links to BBS and shareware CD's from the BBS era (archive.org sourced), which makes up for it. I've since downloaded all of those. Worst case scenario, if I want more files from archives.thebbs.org, I'll just download them from different wifi hotspots using a laptop.
