Major BBS V6.25 question reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IAmRootAtDBZ · 2020-11-24 06:24 So, for PURELY nostalgic purposes and not because it's the best BBS system out there today, I have decided to run Major BBS V6.25. My question is; honestly a simple one but no matter where I look (manual, online resources ect) I can't seem to find an answer. I was trying to get rid of the advertisements that Major BBS seems to load for various modules. You know stuff like T-Lord, and the various teleconference games. I want to be able to clear that up for a more streamlined user experience. If anyone knows if there is an option I can change in the Major BBS config, or a file I can remove to stop them from happening, I would really appreciate it. Look for an option such as "logon announcement". Not all modules had this setting, particularly in the early MBBS v6.25 days. There are a number of them lurking in CNF level 3, 4, and even 6. You can find a lot of them by searching "logon" and "advertise" and disable them. The ones you can't disable (CNF level 6) you can edit with BBSDraw and just delete everything on the screen. However, you might want to make sure you have a backup of your BBS before you go crazy deleting things. It took me quite a while (and a lot of backups just to be safe) but I got rid of all the logon advertisements and banners and my logon is clean and fast now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IAmRootAtDBZ · 2020-11-25 13:20 This was super helpful. You can turn those off in the configuration. Also, it allows you to run MBBS on modern operating systems which simplifies things a ton from some of the VM/Docker configurations I've seen out there. Another benefit is all the modules will now use SQLite vs. the legacy Btrieve database which gives you performance increases and more visibility into the data. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IAmRootAtDBZ · 2020-12-11 14:42 I actually went out and bought the "original hardware" and by original hardware a Windows XP netbook. :) It honestly runs just fine. I played around with MBBSEmu and while I believe it may be the future of Major BBS, I experienced issues with it. Not only that but it's compatibility isn't quite there yet and it's only in Alpha...so maybe in the future. Right now I'm pretty happy with my setup.
