High risk high reward project looking for ANSI/BBS graphicians reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Carpenter7338 · 2020-10-12 12:08 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Android8675 · 2020-10-12 14:21 You should pop onto AgoraNet, lots of great/talented artists hang out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Carpenter7338 · 2020-10-12 15:31 >AgoraNet Any link ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kirkman14 · 2020-10-12 15:32 Yeah, this smells like a scam. They are messaging anyone even tangentially related to ANSI/ASCII/BBSing on Twitter. Their messages are very strangely written ("We are a group of passionate of retro computers design" or "Person serious only"). They claim to represent a legitimate company, yet they are posting from a user account called "Ok-Carpenter7338" and asking people to contact users like "balapapa#8958" or "don_karabi #0548" on Discord. And their manifesto website makes it clear they are looking for money ("Reloaded is the funding step of this reality"). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Carpenter7338 · 2020-10-12 15:43 Did you understand our manifesto ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kirkman14 · 2020-10-12 15:53 Frankly, I don't care. I have no interest in cryptocurrency, and I certainly have no interest in investing in such a venture. I just want to warn folks here that this sounds like a scam targeting people in our subculture. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Android8675 · 2020-10-12 15:54 It’s a FidoNet style message network. If you join The Pharcyde BBS you should be able to read/post to the agoranet message boards. You can go to http://bbs.pharcyde.org or use telnet and connect to pharcyde.org. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chairmanmow · 2020-10-12 18:32 I built something for building storing ANSI Art on the Ethereum blockchain in a neural network as ERC-721 tokens couple years back already, still around at [https://blockbra.in](https://blockbra.in) although I need to do some maintenance on it. Hasn't taken off much, and I'm thinking with Ethereum gas prices/values trending in the upward direction I'd probably move it to another chain because I don't see how that helps what I'm doing which is essentially a repository with certain ownership rights to the tokens (artworks) to create a dynamic that's a bit different from a repository that's not on the blockchain. As far as this project goes, I'm not sure what you all are doing, where's this manifesto? This looks like some defi crap pooling project and if so that makes the space I'm in look worse in general (and why people sometimes roll their eyes at me on my project - but it's very much different), but if not I'm curious what this project is about? So vague, I hope there's some utility in it beyond a get rich quick scheme. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chairmanmow · 2020-10-12 20:00 First off just want to say Kirkman, much respect for your work in the BBS community (great blog, loved 2048 on Synchronet, and your frame.js experiments are awesome, etc.) and I believe you are correct in this likely being a scam of some sort, whether or not your lack of interest in Cryptocurrency leads that to being an informed or intuitive conclusion - just want to address in the event of the former line of reasoning being salient, that I thought I might try to pick away at that bias some - though my objective is by no means to get you into cryptocurrency, especially as an investment, but rather to offer a counter of my semi-informed perspective to you a, tremendous steward of BBS lore and info to that there might be cases where a blockchain based around a virtual machine, such as Ethereum offers could have interesting applications inside of BBS's moving forward. So I suppose my only hope is that if there were something based on these technologies that offered some new utility to a BBS they could be covered in that light rather than some investment scheme. This paragraph is just me going on the defensive, just in case, because to be fair I am not unbiased, because I've built something on the Ethereum blockchain; however I'm not going around spamming people, advertising and getting rich, just sinking $700 into AWS costs/year and getting people bulk hating or staring off into space whenever I mention it publicly on me because there's some blockchain component to it, and I worked on so many more things than that. I even made all the art on the site cause no one's used it (but the art is popular when I tweet it using the tool I built) But it's not like the blockchain part isn't interesting in someways. Not to be promotional, I made a video a couple years ago as I was working on it, I am sharing it just because I think it gives insight as to what I saw in the technology for BBS's, but I think there is more to that than what I made ([https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4I3xMEoXPw](https://www.youtub e.com/watch?v=l4I3xMEoXPw) \- I wrote a little more about it in another comment, but I'm not really looking to solicit users here). It's a passion project at this point, much like the door games for Synchronet, mods, shells, etc I've written that have gotten a bit of traction in that scene, but both worlds end up being passion projects for now - ultimately things I write for blockchain or BBS take too much effort for most normal people to even try; there may or may not be many active people on BBS's these days as dapps (decentralized apps) - but some people just don't log on anymore, but blockchain dapps represent this futuristic world where people have never gone... developing for either comes with the same frustrations and let downs when when done you try to get people to use a platform they don't use anymore or have never used before. Here ends the defensive paragraph, I guess I just want to throw out a couple ideas/concepts around why Blockchain + BBS can be a good combo. Think of how Shared message boards like DoveNET or whatever work, they are essentially decentralized repositories of messages passed around that are fairly static, composed of small optimized data structures for lower bandwidth and run on kind a principle of synchronization. I'm not a message base systems expert by any means, however I'd imagine there might be some holes in the security principles based on implicit trust or outdated protocols, etc. in that system, but I could be wrong. In either event, the blockchain can mimic or improve upon those functions, you could sync the chain via consensus, and retrieve/post messages from/to the chain. Logic could also be centralized in a Smart Contract rather than at the client level to add different features to a board. One way running a Decentralized Message board could improve or degrade the experience depending on your perspective, is you may have to provide cryptocurrency of some nature to fuel the exchange, which could cut down on trolls. You wouldn't have to use Ethereum or whatever blockchain either, cause you could fork your own, create the BBSCoin and Ledger, maybe it has no monetary value and is just earned for karma or cpu time donated, etc. Point is you can create utility on a chain without going all-in or all-out on cryptocurrency. It can be a centralized store of data and logic, queried and written to like most API's. And BBS data is great for the blockchain - it's not for JPG's, videos or whatever, that's costly! If you're used to working with data that can fit many times over on floppy disks, come through on 2400 baud modems, you have a better instinct towards making a cool, fun unique blockchain app than someone in their 20's. Also think of how many BBS's/Servers go down, that ledger/chain can keep persisting so long as people use it - reducing dead links to broken servers. Sorry for long winded post, just wanted to share one last idea publicly that I had for the blockchain that I've been thinking of working on in the blockchain, and I think it's a cool idea, it could make a little money, but that's not the point. Basically what I want to do is create a loose port of TradeWars 2002 that runs in a Blockchain's Virtual Machine. I'm still kind of fleshing it out in my head, but I'm thinking you could use the blockchain to make Tradewars a game where the economy is sort of real, like if you're awesome at Tradewars you can redeem your credits for something that can be converted into currency, or if you stink you're dropping money into the economy to rebuild your ship. If someone else builds it be my guest or is interested in some sort of project, it's not about the money it's about building the experience, I think it would be fun to play, maybe I could turn pro... lol Wouldn't something like TW2002 in the blockchain get your attention Kirkman though? Not saying you should tell people to drop their money into it vs their kids college fund... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Carpenter7338 · 2020-10-13 09:40 Your product is good, you were just in advance to what the market was waiting for. Nonetheless, passion does not care about market and you probably paved the way to [https://pixelchain.art/editor](https://pixelchain.art/editor) \- they are doing great. In both case, thanks for building, this is what the ecosystem needs to enrolled sceptic people as Kirkman14. We built a crosschain AMM allowing decentralized swap from Bitcoin to Ethereum blockchains. Manifesto is available at [reloaded.finance](https://reloaded.finance). The "fog" surrounding the project is basically an entry barrer to non educated people and unadapted mindset. We do not need any approval from anyone. Cutting the bullshit, this post stays an opportunity for ASCII and retro computing designers folks to ask for more info. We are please to share the whole doc and designer offer to builders.
