Synchronet on Windows 98SE reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wallyisfound · 2020-09-24 23:43 Does anyone know what the last version to run for Windows 98SE? I've installed 3.13a and upgraded to 3.15b but I'm not too sure if I can continue to upgrade. The website is somewhat fuzzy on where the cut off happened and last, I want to make sure running 3.15b is safe, little information on any bugs/vulnerabilities. The machine is only running the telnet option with everything else disabled, no doors, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stettin · 2020-09-25 02:20 Why not just take a backup and keep trying to upgrade it? I'm not sure why anyone would want to run Win98SE even under a VM when Synchronet supports modern operating systems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UM-Underminer · 2020-09-25 03:03 Perhaps ease of running a few door games or other programs? 98 had real dos rather than the ntvdm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- redbrickchimney · 2020-09-25 04:27 i havent not had a door work in dosemu =) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UM-Underminer · 2020-09-25 04:29 I haven't had one NOT work, so you may want to solicit some help on your configs from someone knowledgable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-09-25 04:51 I'm surprised you made it to 3.15b on Windows 98! That's awesome! I ran my BBS for years on 98 and have many great memories. I don't miss running on 98 one bit, though. While 98 can natively run DOS games, it is terribly unstable, so be ready to baby sit that thing. EDIT: Teh grammarz ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Havrim · 2020-09-25 07:17 You can just uninstall the latest version if it doesn't work. I'd say give it a try. But...I don't know what would happen so assume this post is worthless. I have a few if those lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2020-09-25 08:39 For door game compatibility, you can still use Windows 10 32-bit. I have that for my Synchronet board now. I have it running in a Virtualbox VM. And if you have a really stubborn door game that won't work right, there's a way to have it work in DOSBOX and it works well. Regarding how far can you go with Synchronet - I think any 32-bit or 64-bit Windows will work with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wallyisfound · 2020-09-27 14:18 So I'm running Windows 98 due to the limits of the computer Synchronet is running on. I could downgrade to 95 if stability becomes an issue. It's 98SE with the unofficial SP3 installed.
