Doors without full BBS? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bknight78 · 2020-09-04 00:23 I am looking to run some doors as a way for my team at work to have some way to bond now that we are all working remote. I don’t think anyone else however has ever connected to a BBS so really I’m just looking to run the doors themselves. Is that even possible? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CharlieBrown197 · 2020-09-04 00:30 You can setup a BBS to send you straight to the doors menu, but there has to be a central server for everyone to connect to for multiplayer to work. Do they know how to use a telnet client? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2020-09-04 01:19 Half the BBSes back in the day were specifically for company business. My dads company had a Wildcat bbs just for work. Why skip the experience and go straight to the doors? Make them sign up and post in a few message groups, along with the doors? I mean where is their handle supposed to come from anyways? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2020-09-04 04:10 I can't tell you how with other packages, but with ENiGMA 1/2 you'd simply change the connection flow to drop clients directly to a door or menu of doors. Some doors require a dropfile to identify individuals, so the module you replace in the flow described above might want to make up or prompt for at least a username, or at least keep a login of some sort. If you want to give it a go and run into issues feel free to shout out ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2020-09-04 09:05 You can use GameSrv that is just a telnet interface to a door game server. No BBS required, GameSrv does that. But if all you want to do is just run a BBS for games, they do exist. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PraiseBobSlackOff · 2020-09-04 11:49 There’s software called GameSrv that serves this purpose. Easy to configure and comes with a number of doors in the package. https://www.gamesrv.ca/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2020-09-05 00:03 Great comments .. GameSrv is likely the best solution.. But you can just edit access to all other menu functions, create a new menu that only has the DOORS option and GOODBYE, remove the ewlcome page, goodbye page, etc from just about ANY bbs software telnet capable and do the same thing. I personally cannot stand door games, but I did run an underground bbs WITHIN my other bbs as a door back in the day so I learned quite a bit about them... I would THINK gamesrv would be the best way to go about it since its tailor made just for what you are asking.. You might think about what you lose by doing that though.. Would people not enjoy having at least one message area to discuss the games you host? Would they not enjoy having multi user chat in that same area? File areas are kinda dumb these days so certainly you cut that out - but message and multi node chat I think just about everyone would want..? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2020-09-05 00:03 Plus enigma is just cool as fuck. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bknight78 · 2020-09-05 15:53 Hey everyone. Thanks for the comments! I run a small IT team of about 10 people so we are constantly communicating on several platforms all day. My thought was if we could do something as a team that would take 5-10 mins a day like Global Wars or TW2002 for example that might be a way for the team to bond in these days of working remote. I don’t think anyone else on the team other than myself was much into the BBS scene back in the day so the need for any other features of the BBS are just not needed. I’ll take a look at Gamesrv. Thanks again everyone! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PraiseBobSlackOff · 2020-09-06 18:39 I don’t know enough about coding, but I’ve always hoped someone would make a door that acted like a message base for external message networks. Then you could, in essence, have messages in GameSrv. Using an IRC door, you can have chat rooms. I guess same principle could apply for files access to an ftp/sftp server Or, yes, you can just install any bbs software and edit out functions you don’t want in menus and with acs levels. 🤓 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2020-09-06 18:51 Yea, you basically just described a bbs with the file areas not used.. :) I have an odd way of thinking like that as well though - I like stripped down and clean code because if when you untick the checkbox, vulnerabilities and the chance of bugs from those unchecked options still exist - its not like they get removed from the program - unless some smart programmer coded them into individual dll’s for every function —— so I’ve also thought of similar stuff.... At the same time Syncronet is open source - and if you are TRULY a good coder, then it would certainly be possible to rip out the uneeded stuff from syncronet, recompile it and brand it as your own... It is a HUGE freaking animal though so I’ve never dug into it to do the same.. I did used to take old TP 3.0 forum based BBS source code (TCS, emulex, vision .82, etc) and do this very thing with them.. Fun days and now that I see the game serv guy is going to add SSH, I may actually do it again because at that point I could securely run an old school bbs ... something to consider.
