Mystic vs Enigma 1/2 reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrhatestheworld · 2020-08-26 19:00 I'm only recently getting back to running my own BBS, and I'm having a hard time deciding between Mystic and Enigma 1/2. Could anyone with more information on them chime in with some pros/cons or opinions? Which one is the easiest to customize etc. I've installed both systems and have them open to telnet, but I just can't decide which one I should really focus on making "mine" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thesecretdave · 2020-08-26 19:03 Watching. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wintrmte · 2020-08-26 22:53 RemindMe! 3 days ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-08-26 22:56 Why not Synchronet? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrhatestheworld · 2020-08-26 23:46 These are just the first two I started messing around with. What does Synchronet offer that the other two don't? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-08-27 00:09 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrhatestheworld · 2020-08-27 00:13 I have a running Mystic setup that's heading in the direction I want it to, I'm just wondering if there is a compelling reason to switch before I'm in too deep. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RemindMeBot · 2020-08-27 00:31 There is a 1 hour delay fetching comments. I was just a little surprised that Synchronet wasn't an option. I can only speak from my own experience as far as comparing BBS software. I have not tried Enigma 1/2, but I did try Mystic for a while in the early 2000's then moved to Synchronet because I couldn't get any doors to work on Mystic. I moved to Synchronet and they worked. That was at least 15 years ago, so I'm sure Mystic has had changes since then. So, I think it depends on what you want your BBS to be. Any BBS package will have customization options. I have found the level of customization with Synchronet to be nearly endless, which I really enjoy. Nearly anything can be changed or customized. Do you want to develop your own doors / modules? Synchronet or Mystic may be the way to go as they both offer languages to develop integration with. Synchronet offers Javascript. Mystic offers Python 2. I don't know if Enigma 1/2 offers such. However, if you're just looking to have a few message networks, some files and a few door games and change a few ANSIs, then I think any of the three BBS packages would work fine. Maybe support should be considered. I understand Newskooler is very responsive when asked questions about Enigma 1/2. I believe Mystic has a support forum managed by users. I've heard the developer has been dodgy with development and support. Synchronet's author is still very active in development and offers many different ways to reach out and ask questions. Synchronet's users are also very active in offering help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- analog_potatoes · 2020-08-27 02:55 Mystic is great. Huge user base and g00r00 is actively maintaining it with great tie-in for python module support. Enigma is a little less mature but completely open source. NuSkooler is a great guy and is using NodeJs for it. If you are a little more hacker, Enigma is the way to go. If you want a more traditional software with a long history behind it, Mystic is perfect. Now both of them are unlike the beast of Synchronet. It’s a much more mature software but I don’t like it. I like the Linux CLI. Synchronet runs on Linux but it wasn’t originally designed for it so you have a very “ported” feel. If you are a beginner, it’s easy to get up and running. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2020-08-27 05:13 Author of ENiGMA here. Mystic is a great package and has been around longer with more polish in areas. Enig is extremely customizable - you can change literally anything - but that comes with having to learn the system for sure. No fancy UI even for the basics, just editing of config files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrhatestheworld · 2020-08-27 20:12 Thank you very much for coming here and giving your opinion. I really do appreciate it. I *really* want to "get" ENiGMA. I got it installed (with some help from some people on GitHub) but I'm finding myself unable to get simple things like DoorParty and BBS Link to work, and I haven't even started trying to customize anything. I'm fairly good at following directions and figuring things out but I'm stumped. The log files say bad authentication status, but I'm using the same logins as on my other installation. Anyway, I really do like your software and I hope to be able to figure it out eventually! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2020-08-27 20:37 I'm surprised that DoorParty or BBSLink are the things you're having trouble with. You literally put in your creds to those systems and it just works. I'd expect issues with customization learning curve :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrhatestheworld · 2020-08-27 22:05 Yeah, thats what I did, but neither of them work! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrhatestheworld · 2020-08-28 07:42 I just tried to install SynchroNet with no luck. I followed the directions for linux exactly (I'm running ubuntu 20.04) and was unable to have a running installation. I have Mystic and ENiGMA running just fine on the same machine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrhatestheworld · 2020-08-28 07:42 I just tried to install SynchroNet with no luck. I know lots of people enjoy using it on Ubuntu and Debian. If you want to troubleshoot it, a good spot for support would be Synchronet's IRC channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-08-28 17:17 > Haven't tried Synchronet on Linux.
