Deep Thought BBS reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njburchett66 · 2020-08-26 00:55 New WWIV BBS by an old sysop from the 90's rediscovering his BBS roots. Deep Thought BBS focus is mainly on history, critical thinking, and a little bit of levity. There are some generalized and open forum type topics as well. But the focus is to bring like-minded people together in a smaller, more manageable community at a slower pace. Quality, not quantity. The other focus is to bring people back to bbsing and to introduce a generation that has never known a world without the internet to the way online was done when they were born or even before they were born! It was addicting then and it can be so again! I am running WWIV 5.4 via telnet ([bbs.deepthoughtbbs.com](https://bbs.deepthoughtbbs.com)) and currently have Tradewars 2002, Lord, Lord \]\[, and Planets TEOS online games. To learn more about BBSing and how to get connected, visit my website [http://deepthoughtbbs.com](http://deepthoughtbbs.com) Spread the word!! The reign of sysops is coming back! :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-08-26 03:07 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- --DJDISDABEST-- · 2020-08-26 04:39 new user too! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mylittleplaceholder · 2020-08-26 08:07 I knew a deep thought BBS in the 80s-90s, but it was near Los Angeles. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmine45 · 2020-08-26 09:25 Yes, he's running on port 2323. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benchly · 2020-08-26 10:00 Does not appear to be up at the moment. Do you offer SSH connection? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codefenix · 2020-08-26 12:25 I signed up this morning. Things appeared to run well until I got to the main menu, then it wouldn't accept any keystrokes from me and booted me off. Appears to be down at this moment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njburchett66 · 2020-08-26 12:54 It was down, not sure what happened. Investigating. It is online now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njburchett66 · 2020-08-26 12:55 It was down, but should be back up. I don't offer a SSH connection now, but I I will be adding that as well soon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PraiseBobSlackOff · 2020-08-26 20:38 I logged in and it was running Mystic and there was only one other user. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njburchett66 · 2020-08-26 20:55 Yeah, I decided to switch. WWIV has a lot of issues IMHO. Plus, most of the online documentation is at times only half right, and getting solid answers was becoming a struggle. I tried working through them, but honestly, was not getting very far. Mystic seems much more solid, and so far the documentation seems fairly accurate. Setting up the BBS also seems to be going smoother. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njburchett66 · 2020-08-26 20:56 I decided to forgo WWIV. Way too many issues and is just not that stable. It was throwing a lot of errors and kicking offline. I have had Mystic up now for a couple hours and haven;t had any issues so far. So I am switching. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rushfan90210 · 2020-08-27 04:27 If you have some examples I’d be interested in knowing them so I can fix the docs. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WWIVPENGUIN · 2020-08-27 12:36 Where did you reach out for help? The IRC chat, and Reddit are full of people who are willing to help. Granted I might take a day or so to answer as I work full time. I too would be interested in the problems that popped up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njburchett66 · 2020-08-27 13:02 Sure, so there are a lot of references to WWIVserver.exe, even in the initial install instructions. That is nowhere to be found when I downloaded 5.4 and 5.5. I knew to start wwivd, but the instructions made me feel like I was missing something. The biggest issue is with the chains. Most of the example displays are not the same as what is displayed when you go into //CE. Fields that have settings have either changed or are not there at all. Another issue with chains is the use of the TEMP directory. most show TEMP%n when in actuality I figured out it needs to be TEMP\\%n (example: c:\\wwiv\\oe\\oedit.exe -n%n -pC:\\WWIV\\***TEMP%N*** \-1 of OpenEdit). There just seems to be a lot of assumptions in the documentation. But it's been almost 30 years for some of us trying this again, and what y'all have been doing consistently needs to be relearned by us old newbies. Another thing is I visited a number of WWIV boards and there is very little activity for helping WWIV sysops out that isn't at least 6-8 years old already. Even in local subs, just not a lot of info to help out. I will admit I did not go to IRC chat, but I have used reddit. Even doing Google searches turns up either very dated info that normally doesn't work or no info at all. Another thing is addressing system errors related to WWIV (bbs.exe crashing often, a better understanding of NTVDM, console errors that show an error but then either says it's fine or locks up, etc.) I understand completely people work full time and this is a hobby, trust me, I do. But you would think that there would be more answers out there. No offense, but I have never used Mystic before, and I had it setup and running, doors and all, in an hour. It's been running for almost 24 hours, had callers, and hasn't crashed once. That's a good sign. Thanks for reaching back out though. I appreciate the follow-up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rushfan90210 · 2020-08-27 17:12 Thanks. Was the crashing mostly around running doors? This is good examples. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njburchett66 · 2020-08-27 18:01 Not always. Mostly it was random: when people were logging in, scanning messages, trying to access files, and yes, chains as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njburchett66 · 2020-09-08 02:25 Update - currently on port 4242 due to some other issues with 2323.
