What's your favorite BBS client you use today? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-05-08 16:06 There's a few options available out there. The ones I've tried that run in a modern OS (alphabetical order): * fTelnet (web / mobile) * Hyperterminal * Netrunner * Qodem * SyncTerm There are telnet clients as well... not talking about those. Using the 'telnet' command or putty won't show ANSI properly on BBSes... What's your favorite? Why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2020-05-08 16:48 I use Syncterm because it does everything I need and I haven't felt the need to try anything else. It isn't missing anything I use. Sometimes I also use DOS emulation w/tcpser and use Telemate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Triplicate_Truth · 2020-05-08 18:15 I use DosBox (with it's modem emulation setup) and run either Procomm or QModem. It's kind of fun to type ATDT bbsaddress to "dial" out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tele-arena · 2020-05-08 18:16 For Windows machines, Dink's old mTelnet: https://mt32.bbses.info/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-05-08 18:45 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2020-05-08 19:00 Zoc. Use it both for BBSing and as an SSH client for my home lab. Works very well for both. Also use mTCP on an old 486, when I'm feeling extra sentimental for that "Old DOS" experience. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wndrbr3d · 2020-05-08 20:05 I mostly use Netrunner. The only downside is, for whatever reason, on windows it uses a greater than 0% GPU for rendering. So if I leave it open (even minimized) I lose a couple fps in games. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- huanchodaoren · 2020-05-08 21:04 A copy of Telix from an old floppy running in dosbox works with telnet or dialup with just a minor dosbox.conf tweak ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-05-08 21:13 Cool! I've tried both Procomm and Qmodem in DosBox and couldn't get ANSI to render right. The only client I could find that did well with ANSI was Telemate 4.21. Do you run into ANSI issues? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-05-08 21:17 That's awesome! It's great it installed from a floppy disk. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- huanchodaoren · 2020-05-08 21:28 Yes, still had all my favorite BBS numbers from 1992. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-05-08 22:05 >mTelnet I tried to install mTelnet on Windows 10 here a while back and it wouldn't run for some reason. I saw your comment here and decided to try mTelnet again because I enjoyed using it so much in the early 2000's. Worked this time! Awesome! I'm thinking I used the exe installer last time. This time around I extracted the zip. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2020-05-09 08:08 I call a lot of Atari 8 bit BBSs. Syncterm has fantastic ATASCII emulation (which is the Atari 8 bit character set). It even supports 80 column ATASCII. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ozznixon · 2020-05-09 23:35 I prefer Glitch web and desktop terminals. Why? They are the only terminals that support true color, sound, resize, save screen as thumbnail or ansi and support multiple protocols and email login for quick in and out. Ozz ---------------------------------------------------------------------- swolf154 · 2020-05-12 14:56 My favorite is Netrunner. It's the only telnet client that full- screen works for me. However Syncterm is what I use most of the time because it just works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mehtevas1978 · 2020-05-13 22:56 Lawd, this brings back memories. Used procomm first back in the old days then qmodem for windows 95 for later 90s stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gamgee3 · 2020-06-21 02:30 SyncTerm on Linux. Sometimes Netrunner but not too often.
