VBBS for a warez / underground styled bbs? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2020-04-16 16:31 I stumbled across a bbs running vbbs/vabbs and it had a matrix logon, ansi news all of the stuff that made us love the 80's bbs's (pc at least) ... I had no idea that you could run a pirate-ish looking bbs using this sorta (in my eyes anyway) PD software... Anyone familiar with any archives of mods for vabbs? I've googled and found some - I'm looking for perhaps non obvious stuff.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- darkytoo2 · 2020-04-16 19:25 I always hated vbbs for that reason, everybody around my area had switched to vbbs and I really had a craving to be unique. I would try archives.thebbs.org first, you can also try synchro.net, which at least at one point they had old bbs CD-rom files up for download. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DVinson68 · 2020-04-16 20:53 I have some VABBS related stuff on my board: Furmen's Folly (telnet: furmenservices.net) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PotentialDeadbeat · 2020-04-17 01:58 Are you talking about Virtual BBS by Roland de Graaf or another? VBBS became VADV, not familiar with VABBS. I was pretty deep in VBBS and never see it talked about much, just askin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- slewp · 2020-04-17 03:12 I'm not familiar with vbbs/vabbs, but have you looked at Mystic? It is relatively still modern and updated and has ansi news, lightbar menus etc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PraiseBobSlackOff · 2020-04-17 08:49 I remember seeing some heavily modded vbbs back in the day. Also saw a Wildcat based warez board that had the matrix, new user voting, etc. Chatted with the op one day and mentioned that it seemed like reinventing the wheel by going through all that trouble with Wildcat and he mentioned it had to do with support for the CD towers and ISDN line that the warez/art softwares lacked in. It was a really great board with like 21 discs online. Dude interviewed me over the phone to get access. They got raided, of course. Sorry to go off topic. I also saw a Tri-BBS all dressed up for npd one time as well. That is all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2020-04-17 23:11 Interesting - and no worries, its basically on topic... thats like saying someone too Opus and made it into a warez board.. Or citadel... lmfao.. I’m gonna check out vbbs since its got in built telnet and all that - and yea, i know mystic and others do to. Just curious. Its been about 30 years since i played with vbbs. Also interesting in looking at the code... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2020-04-17 23:12 Yea we’re talking about the same thing.. i just called it the wrong acronym lol. And yea someone is running it on telnet that has it all scened up which is what led me to ask the Q. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2020-04-17 23:13 Yea I’m pretty familiar with all the well known sites.. thank you though. Pcmicro had some stuff as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PraiseBobSlackOff · 2020-04-20 00:19 There was a point where vadv32(?) had a site where you could get a reasonable version of that online with a built-in telnet server. You might be able to finagle older versions with and older os using GameSrv. I ran an obv/2 board that way for a while.
