BBS Excellence reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thatpragmaticlizard · 2020-03-08 06:33 Well, I suppose this is a good problem to have in a way. What I've seen here is an excellent display of good BBS deployments ... so good that I don't think I could compete (not that, of course, it is a competition.) You're all so good at it that I'm impressed, particularly how customized they are and how the integrate with newer technologies born since the 90's. There are a number of them, for example The Vortex BBS and the customization put into place ... well, my hats off to you! I'm just down to one reason why I should run one myself: I have the bits and pieces of a door game that I've always wanted to complete and that's probably what I shall do. But I want to let the community know that the offerings I've seen lately are awesome and excellent. And this is a good problem to have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-03-08 13:58 Cool! What kind of door game are you working on? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thatpragmaticlizard · 2020-03-08 23:53 Dungeon Crawl style game, multiplayer. I ran into the code for it when I dug out some of the closets at my folks home and ... it's terrible code and naturally, can write better code now in a more modern language (python3.7 now instead of Turbo Pascal 6.0 then) and it sort of woke up a spark in my brain that perhaps I should see if I can write it in a more modern form factor with far better technology at my disposal. I just need to actually do it now. XD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- f15sim · 2020-03-09 01:52 You might want to look into porting it to Free Pascal. Object Pascal in its current form is pretty "modern". Take a look at Lazarus as well. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thatpragmaticlizard · 2020-03-09 02:14 While I am sure that it's an awesome project and it \_might\_ be compatible, my brain wouldn't be. I think more python these days. XD Still, it's good to know as an option! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arelas404 · 2020-03-09 14:00 At The Vortex, we've heavily invested in Python. I'd love to see what you've come up with and we would gladly run your door once it's ready. Also, thanks for the compliments! It makes all the hard work worth it when we see people enjoying the BBS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thatpragmaticlizard · 2020-03-09 18:02 I'll be happy to share. Just to ask, do you run off of Linux or Windows? And I love Mystic, but still a bit leery about developing for it since it seems to leverage Python 2.x. Has this been prohibitive in any way? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- f15sim · 2020-03-09 18:19 Good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nevarro · 2020-03-10 00:47 Nice! That would fit well with the medieval theme of the bbs. When you're at a point when you're comfortable to share, I'd like to review it and maybe host it for beta testing :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Valdebrick · 2020-03-10 09:09 FYI, you can write a door in a modern language and have it supported by a good number of BBS systems. Synchronet has support for doors written in javascript (there are currently efforts to port LORD) and Mystic has support for doors written in Python! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arelas404 · 2020-03-30 18:56 Sorry for the late reply. We currently use Windows 10 x32. We ran on linux for a while, but support for dos games is what brought us back to windows. Under linux, we used dosemu2, which is a fork of the original dosemu. It worked well enough, but we always ran into issues. Another issue we didn't like was not having the ability to quickly and easily run dos applications from a remote desktop. Since we run the bbs machine as a VM on a local server, this isn't really a problem for us. If you are considering running it on a VPS, linux is about the only way to go. While python 2.x is a bummer, it works well enough for us but we do hope for 3.x support at some point.
