How do I display ansi locally on a windows 7 machine when I log into my own BBS through the sysop menu? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Redditisaladder · 2020-02-01 23:59 Edit: I figured it out on my own. My mommy is proud. Ok, so here is how you do it just in case in the future someone searches for this. Go into your windows/system32 folder and find config.nt open it in notepad and add to the very bottom the following WITHOUT quotes "device=c:/windows/system32/ansi.sys" save and reboot. If you need permission to save, you need to go to user permissions and select your login name and give yourself full access control to everything. I rebooted and I am in business. Thanks anyways! The following is hereby void. So I am running VBBS because that is what I used back in the late 90's. I am having trouble remembering how to do some of the things. For example, it has a sysop "wait" screen that shows who is online, what they are doing etc. There is a button I can push to log in locally to test things. I remember that I needed to set something up with regards to windows to display ansi characters. I can sorta remember the dos era where I had to have an auto exec bat and config.sys and I had to load ansi.sys from there, but ... I can't remember more than that and was curious if there was a way to just install a driver or something in windows 7 32 bit that does the same. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- orion3311 · 2020-02-02 00:22 Not sure if windows has it but you may need to put ansi.sys in the config.sys file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- caress-of-steel · 2020-02-02 06:53 The good old days. You can also spin up a VM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- speeb · 2020-02-02 14:12 I also ran VBBS way back when! It was such a great, powerful, and easy to use system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Redditisaladder · 2020-02-03 06:04 Yah Speeb, it was really fun. I was decent at writing in vscript and had heavily modified my bbs at the time. I was an area coordinator for vnet for a while and had 2 lines and about 20 different door games. I had a lot more energy back then. One of the things that was important back then (pre internet) was having users actual information like real name, phone number, address etc. Now-a-days with privacy concerns I don't really want to ask for much of that information. Just alias, password and maybe what part of the world they live in for a visitor list. Unfortunately without source modding (I don't know visual basic) I can't seem to bypass those questions. What I am thinking about doing instead is running a vintage apple mac and apple 2 bbs using Hermes II. It is what I am working on now and thankfully it has the ability to NOT ask those questions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- speeb · 2020-02-03 12:12 I'm tinkering with Synchronet again and the first thing I did was turn off all those questions as well. The world is a much different place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Redditisaladder · 2020-02-03 17:45 Windows version of Synchronet does not have modem support correct? it is telnet only? Edit, nevermind. I found out about sexpots and got that kinda working. Won't install as an NT service on win 7 but I can just create a .bat file to do that later. Very cool software. I think I'll dive in to sync for a bit and see how I like it. I like that I can turn off those questions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- speeb · 2020-02-03 18:03 Ah, that I don't know. Sorry.
