I'm trying to find old content about Return of the Jedi. reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BaneWilliams · 2019-12-28 17:00 So someone posted this as a meme, [https://i.imgur.com/ei9NNDL.png](https://i.imgur.com/ei9NNDL.png) but it got me thinking... Can we look back in time to see what people were saying about Return of the Jedi at the time of its release? Obviously 83-84 wasn't a particularly thriving time, but hopefully an archive out there somewhere can shed some light on this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mixedliquor · 2019-12-28 18:12 Would Usenet have been used during this period? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BaneWilliams · 2019-12-28 18:15 Reasonably likely, it's around the right time period I would think. It wouldn't have been amazingly well known yet (At least in Australia, Usenet wasn't particularly adopted by most PC enthusiasts until around 87-88), but that doesn't mean it wasn't used. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-12-28 18:16 [https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/net.movies.sw](https:// groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/net.movies.sw) You can find threads dating back to 84/85 here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BaneWilliams · 2019-12-28 19:10 Thank you for this, I also went back through net.movies just in case I missed anything. Outside of a weirdo raving about how terrible it was to have a negro in Star Wars, it was all pretty positive stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lubujackson · 2019-12-29 03:33 Almost exclusively by computer department people at colleges. The internet was not really accessible to most people in until dialup access began to spread in the early 90s (first through packaged services like Prodigy/AOL, then Netzero or whatever else was out there). My dad worked at a computer lab at a college so I had a taste of Lynx (imageless web browser) and FTP before hitting to college in '95, where I had ethernet in my room. Colleges were the hotbed for the spread of the internet. My sister went to college in '91 and general students were given email addresses and used shared terminals to access (at an engineering college no less). The internet was around for a couple decades before that though, almost exclusively on college campuses. Usenet was started around '80 or '81 but it spread quickly to all the cutting edge nerds who were already familiar with the internet, so I imagine there was some decent chatter by a small but vocal college crowd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2019-12-29 05:16 This is probably what you want: https://archive.org/details/SFLoversDigestArchive Date: 22 Apr 83 19:59:38-PST (Fri) From: ucivax Guest Subject: RotJ Trip The SAMASUCICF (sponser of the infamous SIGI Awards) would like at this time to extend to any humans, droids, wookies, or other alien life forms who might care to join it, its invitation to attend the Saturday evening performance of "Return of the Jedi" on Saturday May 28th 1983. The SAMASUCICF Crack Suicide Squad will be spending the Friday night at one of OC's local picture palaces to insure the appropriation of sufficient tickets. If you are interested in participating in this event, please contact John Mangrich (MANGRICH (DEC-10), grich@uci (icvx), jmangric@uci-unix (unix)) or Tom Johnson (TOM (DEC-10), tjohnson@uci-unix (unix); messages may also be left at the Computing Facility Office (CS360)) and tell them how many of your friends, family, fellow-workers, casual acquaintances, total strangers, business rivals and blood enemies you wish to bring with you, so that we can guesstimate the size of the horde we will have to coordinate. As many of the details of this adventure are still rather vague, further announcements will be made as the film date approaches and more information becomes available. /tlj P.S.: For those of you who can't wait until Saturday May 28th, a splinter group of SAMASUCICF members will be camping out at the theater on Tuesday night (May 24th) for the OC premiere on Wednesday. You are more than welcome to share the cold and damp. I'm sure it will take a while to clean up the loose ends from 4-month old messages... About "Return of the Jedi": I purposely avoided all spoilers before seeing the film, and found that my enjoyment increased. Funny, though, how the solutions Lucas did pick matched some of the more predominant speculation here in SFL a couple of years back. I also went back and read the Time article; it only gave away one significant plot element. Steve Lionel There's a lot more in there. Robert Amsler's review of Tue 7 Jun 1983 will be of particular interest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dcpanthersfan · 2019-12-29 05:21 BBSes didn’t really enter their heyday until the mid-late 80s which was way too long for ROTJ to be relevant to BBSes. There mart have been the discussion or two but most boards were hyper local. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4_bit_forever · 2020-01-01 05:15 just read old issues of Sci Fi magazines, especially Starlog. https://archive.org/details/texts?and%5B%5D=starlog+1983&sin=
