Easy BBS telnet servers for DOS? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcandre · 2019-08-24 18:25 Hi, I want to setup a FreeDOS machine as a build bot for compiling DOS applications. What are some easy to install BBS servers? Ideally, these would provide telnet access with an mTCP Ethernet connection, and offer file transfer over XMODEM / YMODEM. If possible, would be great for the BBS to operate as a TSR, so that other network commands like wget, ping, ftp, etc. can be run inside a telnet session. So far, I've tried rmenu but it drops telnet signals like crazy and hogs all the network access while it runs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scrutinizer80 · 2019-08-24 20:23 EleBBS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-08-25 15:14 why would you want xmodem and ymodem? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcandre · 2019-08-25 16:25 So that the telnet server can provide file transfers by itself. That way, even if other networking apps are unable to function, the telnet server can do both remote commands and file swap, the only requirements for a build bot to work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2019-08-26 02:10 sounds like a bad idea. run a vm and compile them there ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcandre · 2019-08-26 02:56 That's exactly what I am working on automating. Most VM's receive commands via SSH. But DOS does not have an SSH server, only telnet servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-08-26 13:12 understood! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcandre · 2019-08-27 19:59 The EleBBS page explains that the telnet server feature is not available in DOS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiniteYogurt · 2019-09-06 21:59 Maybe [Doorway](http://pcmicro.com/doorway/) would do what you want? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mcandre · 2019-09-07 05:44 That is neither free nor open source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiniteYogurt · 2019-09-10 03:45 You didn't ask for free and open source. I seriously doubt you will find what you're asking for as free/open source unless you write it yourself. That said, do you *really* think that $20 is too much to ask? If so, I think you should reconsider your objectives, and look at batch files combined with a dos emulator like DosBox ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stone_henge · 2019-10-27 16:54 I have used DOSBox for automating C builds (with Turbo C). I just put my command sequence in `AUTOEXEC.BAT` and launched it in headless mode. Plus it's easy to launch DOSBox in regular mode if your build absolutely requires user interaction.
