Old School Underground (hacking/phreaking) style BBS today? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-03-14 04:31 And no - I am not looking to do anything illegal, and yes I understand that the phone system these days is not susceptible to phreaking as it was in the 90s and earlier. Just curious if anyone knows of a BBS that has that underground “feel” and possibly also hosts files of the hack/phreak utility type (wardialers, old code scanners, vmb hackers, etc).. I know there are a few Commodore 64 BBS’s that carry those kind of file areas - guess I’m just looking for more.. Thanks! And thanks for maintaining this group! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zerosouls · 2019-03-14 04:55 Not a BBS, but there is always [http://textfiles.com/directory.html]( http://textfiles.com/directory.html) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DaiTengu · 2019-03-14 14:27 I have some hacking/phreaking stuff on my BBS, ( [warensemble.com](https://warensemble.com)) but it's all stuff you can find elsewhere. The key with these old underground boards was that people would upload files to share, and that just doesn't happen anymore. It's now the job of the sysop to go out and find these files, then spend the time to curate them. I've been working on it, but it's a tedious process, and there are a lot of sites out there that have already done the work that people don't have to call long distance to get to. There are a few BBSes out there that have the "Underground" feel due to their customized art/menus/addons, but past that they really just have the same stuff as every other BBS. Door games, message areas that are either found on other BBSes, or are silent local areas, and a file section that is full of files easily googled. I too long for the "underground" BBS days when Vision-X, Oblivion/2, and other "l33t" BBS software boards were common, but it wasn't the software that made these BBSes so awesome, it was the users and the community that they formed. That ain't comin' back :( Edit: I have a bunch of files sitting on my drive that I haven't added to my BBS yet. I keep going back and forth between setting up a second "Underground" BBS for things of a more "questionable" nature, or just tossing them up in a semi-hidden area on War Ensemble. I've never had anyone directly ask me for any of this stuff, so I only wind up working on it when I get the urge to see what's in my mess of a collection (which has all been acquired from other places on the internet). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AchillesDev · 2019-03-14 15:25 [ClownSec](http://clownsec.com/) has a telnet BBS and a PBX you can play with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- travisjd2012 · 2019-03-14 18:03 Don't forget you can test your new found knowledge at 630-485-2995. Blow 2600, drop a trunk and go to town. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AfternoonPenalty · 2019-03-14 18:32 Just had a look at your site - memories came flooding back. Just joined this sub and its brilliant. Might need to try to set one up myself one day ---------------------------------------------------------------------- danav · 2019-03-14 19:09 I understand you're looking for h/p/a/v/c but this is a fun site -- http://blackflag.acid.org/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-03-14 22:37 I suppose you are correct about the community thing. I am pretty sure I've got everything known to man PC wise.. probably c64 and apple2 wise as well... What I'm hoping to stumble upon is someone who has some of the Atari H/P apps from the day. For whatever reason that stuff didn't get archived like it has for the other platforms. I used MANY different utils for the atari and remember them by name but they are ghosts today... sad. Check out [www.wardialers.org](https://www.wardialers.org) for my progress on putting all my stuff in an archive with details and pics... lots of work - but its a start. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- judith68 · 2019-03-15 02:39 Oh man Vision-X and Obv/2 were my favorites, telegard and renegade also pulled their weight but now l33t enough for the 40MB of wareZzZ and nudie pics I was trying to serve. I remember the day I retired my IBM PS/1 system with NO HARD DRIVE and got the 386SX/16 with the previously mentioned 40MB hard drive and thought I'd probably never run out of space hehe ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DaiTengu · 2019-03-15 12:25 Black Flag and Acid Underworld are probably the two boards that feel the most "underground" to me these days. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beyondthewallofsleep · 2019-03-15 17:59 I just went there and the sysop was incredibly rude. Not to mention barely literate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mysticbbs · 2019-03-18 04:59 Some BBSes have those files around and there is at least one network that has that sort of theme that I know of. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mysticbbs · 2019-03-18 05:00 Hey now you just had to hex edit Renegade to make it l33t haha ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DaiTengu · 2019-03-18 15:03 Hawk Hubbard? I'd describe him many ways, but neither of those two come close. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beyondthewallofsleep · 2019-03-18 15:18 Yeah, it was him I think. He took over my session, said my username was dumb and that he was going to delete my account. He then mocked my response, said "next time dont be so sloppy" and then I was disconnected. It was literally 2-3 minutes after connecting to a BBS for the first time.I had no idea what I was doing or how I had been sloppy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DaiTengu · 2019-03-23 21:43 paging /u/Hawk_Hubbard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-03-29 02:48 I’ve collected gobs of it - but am always looking for more to add to my online archive (http://wardialers.org) .. Thanks for the response.. Keeping my eyes peeled. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheBottomlessAbyss · 2019-04-16 02:56 It's most probable, if you created an account named sdfsdf or something that shows no effort or appears just random. Let me put this into perspective... Some sysops takes this seriously and put countless hours (hundreds even thousands) in making boards that are both nice looking, functional and offering good content. To my opinion, it's a matter of respect to create an account that reflect respect in return. I've seen over the years many users connecting, creating an account, getting to the main menu and disconnect without never coming back or even try any option, I mean none. This is extremely insulting. You better not connect instead of doing that. What do you get from such an experience really? It takes time to appreciate the content of a BBS and sadly these days, many users are not taking that time, or for anything in life. Luckily, it's not every users... I feel fortunate to have a good user base and many regulars, however, I apply a policy very similar to Hawk and will not hesitate to jail a user if he creates a botched account. Cheers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wts42 · 2019-04-24 10:34 They suspended the account for your site. :/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-04-25 13:16 thank you! auto pay failed for whatever reason.. resolved. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wts42 · 2019-04-25 14:06 Thanks for informing back. Will your files just be on the web or are there plans to open a bbs too? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-04-25 16:17 seriously thinking about opening up a super underground themed/elite theme.. obviously no 'kodes' or anything... but just for the feel since there is really nothing out there.. so yea, i think there will be a bbs. need to decide if c64/amiga/pc though.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wts42 · 2019-04-25 16:34 Keep us updated. :) I would say pc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-04-25 16:38 will do.. you can always follow my blog or wardialers.org as well.. each will be updated whenever that happens - though i will admit my blog is a bit stale.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wts42 · 2019-04-25 17:02 Already added to my bookmarks. ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-04-25 20:13 i'm actually going to update both sites today... I also run a forum - but with reddit and (now) discord covering basically the same topics I have the forum setup to cover, I probably wont push the forums unless I find a reason to... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wts42 · 2019-04-25 20:20 Forum? Go for a message board. :) One more dialer for your collection THC Scan. You can get it (and some other stuff) from https://github.com/vanhauser-thc/THC-Archive/tree/master/Tools EDIT: from other stuff the RA hacking tools might be interesting. Update in progress? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lucidphreak · 2019-04-25 22:57 Not doing windows/dos stuff on the wardialers.org site at the moment.. all of that stuff is readily found on the net. The goal of wardialers.org is to preserve the stuff that isnt very easy to find... mainly 8/16 bit stuff. As far as my forum goes - yes, forum/message board, same thing as far as I know? It runs Xenforo, nulled of course... lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jfalcon206 · 2019-06-22 10:32 Every now and then telnet://bbs.telephreak.org is up (just need to pester them if it's down) and you'll find all sorts of h/p information from the past 20 years. It is run on EBBS/Unix but every now and then the sysop forgets to watchdog the system. But it always comes back. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-06-12 11:28 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2xthetap115 · 2022-06-12 12:12 I have been struggling with this topic recently, when antique telephones (NEC P3, P9 and OKI900) fell into my hands and I was looking for software, diagrams, etc. For them, it is difficult to find one specific source of software from that time. Damn, how many people even remember how EXPENSIVE it used to be just to make a phone call to any place not 'local'! With current Zoom/Facetime/Skype most people probably don't know that 'long distance' communication wasn't always 'free'. :)
