Can I have some help connecting to my Mystic BBS with telnet reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pizza_squeeze · 2019-02-04 22:40 I got a dynamic DNS service working on my Ubuntu VPS but now what do I do to connect to my mystic BBS? Also, how can I connect to it with a subdomain? and can I run it on the same server that I run my website on? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phatdragonv111 · 2019-02-04 23:37 For the dynamic DNS and hostname use noip.com to get a free subdomain. You should be able to run it on the same server as your webserver because they should run on different ports. It's best to run your webserver on port 80 and your BBS on port 23. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pizza_squeeze · 2019-02-04 23:51 Sorry i forgot to mention that i already have a domain and i setup the dynamic dns on my namecheap ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pizza_squeeze · 2019-02-04 23:53 After how can i make it so people can connect to it with telnet on port 23 with the hostname bbs.mydomain.com? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RazorKitten · 2019-02-05 01:04 Recommend not using port 23, on Linux anything below 1024 is 'reserved' you either have to jump through some hoops, or run it as root instead of a user, which I also wouldn't recommend. Maybe try port 2323 while your setting it up, be easier than getting port 23 working out of the box. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pizza_squeeze · 2019-02-05 01:48 But port 23 is for telnet though so for the telnet port would i put port 2323 instead of port 23? also do you know how i can connect to it with a subdomain on the same server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RazorKitten · 2019-02-05 01:59 Yes, 23 is the default telnet port, but any port can be anything you want. If you install telnetd it'll be on port 23, but as I said, with any Unixy/Linux boxen, any port below 1024 can't be started unless your root by default. But yes, in the Mystic config you'd just tell it to use port 2323, and you'd have to open it on iptables as well. then you can just #telnet localhost 2323 As far as the subdomain goes, just point it in dns to the IP of your VPN, (or use a cname to your dynamic dns provider). But this subdomain has to be of a domain you own/control. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-02-05 02:21 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2019-02-05 03:05 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pizza_squeeze · 2019-02-05 17:17 ok sorry about that i figured the stuff out but now i just need to figure out how to open it with iptables also can i change the ip adapter to only ipv4? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mysticbbs · 2019-02-22 09:41 If you run Mystic server as root it will bind the port and immediately set the user/group ID to the user and group that owns the binaries (instead of running as root. This protection is built into most of the Mystic binaries, so you just have to make sure your ownership is not root.
