Launching a BBS this day and age? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KinkyMoogMonster · 2018-12-25 19:34 I've been interested of starting my own, and was wondering how I can do that with modern software. I already know that there are some programs that seem to let you connect to a BBS, and was wondering how I can start my own, and build it up? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SwordOfKas · 2018-12-25 19:40 According to https://www.telnetbbsguide.com/ there are a decent amount of people starting BBSes. If you start one, let us know! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShooterJennings · 2018-12-25 23:40 You absolutely can. Just put a lot of care into it and customize it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KinkyMoogMonster · 2018-12-25 23:44 Are there any guides online of how I can customize it? I want a general idea of course. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShooterJennings · 2018-12-26 00:41 Well, I’d suggest using synchronet or mystic. Both are very easy and there’s good documentation online. Mystic is very lightweight and works quickly out of the box. Then dial other people’s systems to get ideas of how you want yours to look. I run Wildcat! but most here run Syncronet or Mystic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2018-12-26 04:50 There are a few modern packages which run fine as Internet-ready systems like Synchronet and Mystic. I've played with both of these and they are trivial to get running (in my case, I installed them on a cheap VPS). Documentation is good and generally up to date, too. The thing about these is they are both fairly feature-complete. The only reason to take an old package and run it is because you want to run an old package, which is fine and lots of people do it, including on 8 bit systems like Commodores, Ataris, and Apple // systems. Running these systems are rewarding in their own special way. First decide whether you want to run an old package (for nostalgia's sake or whatever other reason you might have). If that isn't important to you and you just want to run a board to run a board, Synchronet and Mystic (there are others!) are telnet- accessible (ssh too and rlogin as well) out of the box and easy to set up. Customization is covered in the docs of these systems. http://www.synchro.net/ http://www.mysticbbs.com/ One list of boards running on old systems (actual or emulated) is at: http://cbbsoutpost.servebbs.com/ Some other software packages are in the right sidebar. What are you seeking to do is completely doable! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aztracker1 · 2018-12-26 14:47 In addition to synchronet and mystic, there's also enigma, x84 and mbse to consider in modern software. Synchronet is probably the most feature complete, but they all have niceties to them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- layrs67 · 2018-12-26 18:40 You can find BBS themes & screens here: http://www.ansigarden.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LushBBS · 2018-12-26 19:34 each mont there is about 20 new bbses up on telnetbbsguide, also i reccomend using mystic bbs software.
