Had a IM convo through a BBS reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- g70460us · 2018-11-14 21:14 I connected to the telnet bbs blackflag.acid.org left a one liner about how I was connected via linux terminal, and the screen changed to an IM. I could see him type letter by letter, make typos, backspace, fix, then return line. We had a brief conversation and it was beautiful. I don't know why it stuck with me so much, but I wish I was recording it. It felt like going back in time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2018-11-14 22:53 [Talk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_\(software\)) was like this on Unix systems too. It would be an interesting study to see how "type and then send" communication is psychologically different from character-by-character typing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- g70460us · 2018-11-14 23:16 Are there any active charecter-by-charecter chat servers? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2018-11-14 23:34 I think most BBSes which have a Chat with Sysop feature still work this way. Talk can still be used on some modern systems but my experience is that the packages in distros like Debian are moribund and don't work properly (the packages should be fixed or removed.) FreeBSD's talk still works fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IrritatedFDA · 2018-11-15 01:07 Glad to know I'm not the only one who has been on Black flag lately! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dperry324 · 2018-11-15 04:13 How is Cap doing? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kirkman14 · 2018-11-15 14:18 It’s called “breaking in to chat”.
