Beautiful Bathing Beauties BBS reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kaylus · 2018-11-03 19:56 Was this an advertisement or an actual login to something like a NAPLPS BBS system? Quality looks a bit too good for NAPLPS but I figured I would ask :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4_bit_forever · 2018-11-03 20:05 I don't know what NAPLPS means. I do believe this was an actual BBS ad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kaylus · 2018-11-04 00:22 It was a protocol for videotext/teletext - at one point in the early 90s a bunch of utilities were released to make it easy to make lightweight VGA(ish) images that looked exactly like above, and a handful of BBS software received/created mods or add-ons to utilize this. If you used a NAPLPS client you could see in-line VGA images at the speed of Modem within the BBS. I never saw a single working BBS with this feature enabled, but I did play with some NAPLPS BBS software :D [https://web.archive.org/web/20030323145344/http://rhoads.com/turboard /](https://web.archive.org/web/20030323145344/http://rhoads.com/turboa rd/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 4_bit_forever · 2018-11-04 01:32 When I used BBS around 1992 - 1996 most of them could display gifs like this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdavidramsey · 2018-11-05 02:16 I personally don't remember many that displayed GIFs within the context of the BBS experience itself. Towards the end, there was one local BBS running Wildcat 5.x with the browser-like client, but that's the only one I remember using in my area. I know there were a few earlier client-server BBS software packages, but I never used any of them. (Was there one called Excalibur? I remember one having a big ad push in the BBS magazines like Boardwatch, and I think it was called Excalibur, but I'm not 100% sure.) What I do remember is using Windows 3.1 based software (I used QModem and Telix for Windows) when I was on an image-downloading run, because it would show most images as they would download, just like in web browsers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jdavidramsey · 2018-11-05 02:20 Those orbs are what happens when Jack Bauer gives Chloe a disk with BBS GIFs on it and tells her to "enhance." \*lowers head in shame that a 24 joke is the most topical thing that came to mind\* ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RolandMT32 · 2018-11-12 22:03 There was a graphical protocol called RIP (Remote Imaging Protocol), and another graphical client/server system I seem to remember called RoboBoard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kaylus · 2018-11-26 17:41 You must have had a very specific set of BBS' that you dialed - we had a few hundred in the 813 area code and none of them had similar graphics. We did have a few RoboBoard with Rip 1.0 and a handful of Searchlight BBS systems, TriBBS, and a few others that had some minimum RIP graphics too - a few may have had some BBS Ads like this I guess but even these required you to download the screen-sets prior to perusing, so it wasn't exactly prominent and I never saw any with detailed converted GIF images in them. Rip 2.0 was supposed to circumvent this a little and allow inline image viewing but I don't believe many even touched this as the Internet slammed BBS' out of the water in the mid 90s. Now, mid-90s I did have QModem for Windows which allowed viewing images as they downloaded, so you might see something like this if you downloaded it directly. Oh well, just asking :-)
