I am reading some kind of debate or kerfuffle on the fidonews echo
about the NAB (North American Backbone) and Fidoweb.

Can someone explain what these are, what the significance would be for
new sysops who want to carry Fidonet echoes, and why everyone is all
mad?

It's the usual Zone 1 vs Zone 2 wars. My personal opinion? Do whatever
you want. No matter what zone you're in, it's trivial to find someone
in another zone willing to distribute echoes to you in whatever method
you choose. And if the Fido Wars are getting you down, there's some
active FTNs out there that don't have any of this bickering going on -
may I suggest you check out fsxNet?
