I Wrote Some BBS Software (I think). Now What? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PornSoftware · 2018-08-31 06:57 So I wrote some software that functions as a forum within the command line. It could also be expanded to work with any unix desktop application that needs a forum. Complete with thread following/subscribing, comments, file attachments (up and download), a file explorer, user search (with broader search features later) etc. My issue is that I have no idea what to do with it. I wrote it in a kind of feverish dream. You can’t telnet in but that could be rigged up to work. It’s a lightweight client for Linux. A Mac port should be a breeze. One idea is that it mught be more useful if I add a chat room but I’m lost. Should I just release it as a BBS or as BBS software? Edit: I tried to make a pure file sharing service out of it once. Below are some screenshots from that phase. Also, thanks for the suggestions! Not sure it's application without seeing it - please post it to GitHub! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2018-08-31 12:45 You do realize you're in a subreddit full of people who give a shit about communication software like this from the 80s and 90s, right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloverskull · 2018-08-31 13:43 Is it porn software? :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lesliesrussell · 2018-08-31 19:51 + 1 for github or gitlab ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PornSoftware · 2018-08-31 22:12 I had an idea last night that I want to see if I can work into it, will have it up to show asap! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Galileo228 · 2018-09-01 02:00 Qmodem! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- r0ck0 · 2018-09-01 02:04 Maybe make a short little demo video and put on youtube? You can demo & explain a lot in a 2 minute video that might take you hours to do by writing text and taking screenshots. A few screenshots are always good too though. > It’s a lightweight client for Linux. A Mac port should be a breeze. So it is something where each user runs their own instance of the software, and it sends messages to a server? > You can’t telnet in but that could be rigged up to work. This kind of implies that answer to above is "no" ? i.e. you just connect via a terminal and the software only runs on the server? If that's the case, you probably don't really need to write your own telnet/SSH code... on the server maybe you could just create a user for the system, and have that be their shell in /etc/passwd ? So as soon as someone telnet/SSHes to that account it just displays your terminal program. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PornSoftware · 2018-09-01 08:56 Right the answer is no you can't telnet in. It's a client/server setup where the user would connect to the server and use the service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2018-09-05 03:02 Finally looked at the screenshots. This looks really interesting. Please keep us updated as to the development! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- timbernutz · 2018-09-05 22:05 Convert it to android and create a client for it too.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- istarian · 2018-09-17 01:26 So it's really just a command line/text based client to a server? What was the point? I mean it's got sort of a retro look, but what's the utility? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PornSoftware · 2018-09-17 02:07 Excuse the longer response but I thought I'd provide context. The engine it runs on will be what's important over the long term as I typically make games. So I can have it function as a social network that fits right into my existing engines, as the tech here is also based on an old engine. But considering I needed to sample its broad functionality first, and had to build this "lite" UI in order to do so. I figured I might as well come up with a use. What that is, I'm not sure. But I'd say it functions somwhat like Reddit in the command line.
