How do you navigate around a BBS. reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- knightwize · 2018-05-21 06:34 Total BBS noob here but fascinated by BBS's and the retro technology around it. I've found a couple of BBS's and have managed to login, but I'm confused as to how to navigate around them, post and read messages etc. Is there a total-noob-guide to use BBS's ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shifting_colors · 2018-05-21 06:42 They are typically menu-driven. Menu options typically have one letter \[h\]ighlighted The highlighted letter corresponds to the key you need to type to activate that menu option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nzwolfgang · 2018-05-21 07:44 You have to learn to [R]ead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beigemore · 2018-05-21 08:32 Menus where you press the matching letter to choose your option. There is usually a menu item that takes you to the previous menu or the main menu. You should find a menu somewhere. Some will support Hot\-Key. Tell us the BBS software they are running or name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2018-05-22 23:03 "Matrix menu" is a new term for me. I remember hearing the term "Windowed menu" for something similar. My Atari 8 bit BBS incorporated "Windowed menus" which were dialog boxes that were drawn on the screen using Atari's ATASCII character set. You would also use arrow keys to highlight what you want and press Return to execute the menu item. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beigemore · 2018-05-22 23:36 They were sometimes called lightbars or lightbar matrix. Google those with bbs and you’ll see a lot of that stuff for Renegade, Mystic, Telecard, Pcboard, obv/2, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WinHac · 2018-05-23 03:29 What bbs’s you using just curious. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WhoIsMaxMouse · 2018-06-14 02:53 Each BBS is different since you can fully create and customize your own bbs, usually you just use the arrow keys and or typing each letter on the menu screen, what do you think so far? What BBSes you try? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YserviusPalacost · 2018-09-07 21:18 Oh, and we're so close! This is the closest to a typical IRC "RTFM" response that I've seen a question receive lately. Ahhh, the good old days...
