Telemate within DOSBOX, downloading with Zmodem, etc. reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gstandard00 · 2018-05-01 12:26 I got Telemate terminal client working under DOSBOX. What is the trick to get a protocol downloading a file ? Out of the box protocols dont seem to work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ILikeBumblebees · 2018-05-01 13:41 Set up one of the serial ports to emulate a modem. In the `[serial]` section of the config file, `serial1` through `serial4` represent COM ports 1 through 4 in DOS, so set one of their values to `modem`. Then configure your communications software to use the COM port you configured. DOSBox's emulated modem will then act as a telnet client allowing you to connect to remote systems -- just use the normal Hayes-compatible dial commands, e.g. `atdt`, with hostnames or IP addresses instead of phone numbers (you might not be able to store telnet host addresses in your comm software's dialing directory, so it may be necessary to manually enter the dial command to connect to them). File-transfer protocols like Xmodem, Zmodem, Kermit, etc. should work without issue over the telnet connection provided that both the remote system and your comm software support them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SqualorTrawler · 2018-05-01 20:59 > What is the trick to get a protocol downloading a file ? So it sounds like you can telnet in but your transfers fail. This is common and has something to do - I think - with the timing old modem- based protocols expect. I have had *some* success with XModem, but it is flaky. I know that, for example, it has been futile trying to get Punter to work in Commodore emulation to telnettable boards, and I don't think I've gotten Zmodem to work at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UnaClocker · 2018-05-01 21:07 ZModem sends characters that telnet doesn’t support. If I remember right, Kermit was designed for transferring files with “mainframes”. I wonder if that would work better. Though Kermit support died in the late 80’s in most BBS software since ZModem was soooo much easier and faster. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gstandard00 · 2018-05-01 22:51 That sounds logical. I'll give Kermit a try if I bump into it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gstandard00 · 2018-05-01 22:55 Correct. I can view the terminal fine. Zmodem detects initialisation but seems to fail on the first packet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gstandard00 · 2018-05-01 22:57 That's the easy part. I think u would have the same issue too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-05-01 23:22 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- temotodochi · 2018-05-02 01:04 Yeah but isn't that just over the management serial link which actually works with different baud ratings? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-05-02 01:41 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ILikeBumblebees · 2018-05-02 04:56 I'm not sure I understand what you're asking here, then. How to use file transfer protocols within Telemate? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ILikeBumblebees · 2018-05-02 05:01 ZModem should work over telnet in DOSBox -- the issue with normal telnet clients is that the escape characters usually used for terminal control overlap with byte sequences used by ZModem, but since DOSBox's telnet 'terminal' is an emulated modem, it instead uses the Hayes command set, which a protocol designed for transfers over modems won't collide with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gstandard00 · 2018-05-02 05:44 I already know how to setup Telemate within DOSBOX as per your instructions. I actually followed this guide - http://www.starbase21.net/telemate.html If you try it, you will find that protocols like Zmodem are probably not supported by native telnet. hmm there's zssh which is Zmodem compatible SSH/Telnet, I wonder if that would be added onto dosbox somehow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gstandard00 · 2018-05-02 15:21 I think I will leave Telemate for a real machine (I still have my old pc's hanging around), I found Netrunner is pretty good :) Much easier and has a fully working phone book. Thanks all for the help! You guys are awesome! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- temotodochi · 2018-05-02 16:10 I do vaguely recall someone hacking a slip connection through such port. Should be doable in ciscos at least. Maybe a slip\-\>UDP transform might work rather than tcp. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ILikeBumblebees · 2018-05-02 23:40 > If you try it, you will find that protocols like Zmodem are probably not supported by native telnet. DOSBox doesn't use an external telnet client. ZModem has problems with standard telnet clients because it conflicts with the escape character that they usually use, but that shouldn't directly affect DOSBox. The issue may be with the way that the modem emulation itself works. What you can do is try using *nullmodem* emulation mapped to a telnet server. You can redefine the serial ports from the command line and then launch Telemate with the connection already established. If you're using COM1, for example, do this: `serial1 nullmodem server:[server host] telnet:1 usedtr:1` I just tested a ZModem download from a BBS using Telemate 4.21 with this connection method and it worked fine -- the transfer completed without issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevinlamonte · 2018-05-04 22:23 The telnet issue is solved (on *nix anyway) with 'telnet -e none some.bbs.com', which disables the telnet escape sequence. If you are just wanting a nice BBS-like experience and don't care about DOSbox, there are Netrunner, SyncTERM, and qodem available. All of those can do telnet + zmodem + ANSI/CP437. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gstandard00 · 2018-05-05 00:36 Yep Im using Netrunner at the moment, I was after the Telemate experience since that was my goto terminal back in the day, but cant get phone book dialling along with zmodem working there. Thanks for dropping another terminal name Qodem. I will give that try. Maybe I should fire up my old Amiga and get Ncomm or Jr-comm running.
