Best way to listen to ANSI Music? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sgeo · 2018-04-11 02:07 Was curious about BBSes and stumbled on the SyncTERM page, which mentions ANSI Music, and so found http://artscene.textfiles.com/ansimusic/ . The software on there should work on DOSBox, but doesn't play the .mus files and some of the .ams files are broken Tried Qodem, which has a local mode, but that didn't play the files properly (on Windows). SyncTERM's local mode does not function on Windows. Tried Melody Maker 3.1 on DOSBox, which played the music it came with just fine but wasn't reliable on these files (and I haven't seen how to display the text too). Should I just look for a real BBS and upload these there so I can listen easily? Should I mess around with running SyncTERM on Linux? Should I just write my own ANSI music player (I don't feel confident in any ability to do anything other than either playing the music or maybe converting to MIDI, i.e. no visuals) EDIT: I found the ANSIPLAY problem. A lot of the .mus files contain "ESC[M " to start music/sound strings. ANSIPLAY documentation says that should be fine, but fixing it to "ESC[MF " seems to fix things. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevinlamonte · 2018-04-11 13:10 Which version of Windows did Qodem fail on? I'll see if I can get that fixed before the 1.0.1 release. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sgeo · 2018-04-11 13:17 Windows 10 64-bit. I attempted to play the files via the type command after setting terminal emulation to ANSI and enabling ANSI music, not sure if that's right. I hear some beeps that sound like they're part of the song but not the full song, e.g. on wipeout2.ams. Also, is there a way to see what I'm typing in local mode? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevinlamonte · 2018-04-11 14:32 Thanks, I've put this in the bug tracker. Yes, just 'type'ing the file under ANSI emulation ought to work, and if it didn't then that is a bug. > Also, is there a way to see what I'm typing in local mode? Alas, Windows put cmd.exe in "line-oriented mode", so Qodem sees NOTHING from it until you press enter. The next release (hopefully sometime this summer) I'm looking to put out a true 64-bit Windows version, with mbedtls and not cryptlib so good modern ssh support. I'd also like to see how it works with Powershell and the updated Win10 command prompt. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kirkman14 · 2018-04-23 03:09 Keep in mind there are several "flavors" of ANSI music \(see the bottom of [this file](https://github.com/tehmaze/piece/blob/master/doc s/format/ansi.txt), which outlines the problems with the various formats\). Thankfully SyncTerm plays them all pretty well. I have a 10 samples in the textfiles section of my BBS \([Guardian of Forever](https://guardian.synchro.net)\). I also toyed with a little sound effect in my ANSI rpg tile demo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mc36mc · 2023-05-28 21:00 back in my dayz, diz worked 4 me: WriteText(#27'[M'); WriteText(a); WriteText(#14); here a was a string like the names of the notes u wanted to play likes like "a" and so on... and it worked fine on most of the terminalz, dialup 2k4-56k nowadayz i only know dizz: WriteText(#7); edit: where else did you found such .mus files btw? :) thx in advance...
