BBSes with lots of files? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poopootoad · 2018-02-21 18:34 Amiga City has a lot of Amiga stuff and Xibalba has all kinds of things, mainly DOS games. I'm thinking about branching out into Commodore 64. I'm well aware a lot, and probably nearly all of that can be found on the WWW but are there any BBSes that cater to serving files for this platform? I see a bunch here: http://cbbsoutpost.servebbs.com/ ...but I don't know which ones have large repositories of software and other files for download. Also any other big file server BBSes? **EDIT:** one thing I'm sort of hoping to avoid is BBSes that get virtually no traffic and yet still have strict time limits for usage. What the hell is that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jfalcon206 · 2018-02-22 04:36 There are lots of internet archives with filebases. Things like Asimov for Apple II/Early Mac. What are you looking to accomplish? How would you transfer files? If you were to keep it within the realm of BBS's and not BBS with FTP attached, you would be transferring via X/Y/ZModem/Punter and that would depend on one's internet resources or wish to tie up one node to file transfer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2018-02-22 06:45 FWIW, I've been importing thousands of Amiga software and games on Xibalba, plus have a bunch if C64 related material in the queue. IMO the more this kind of stuff can be preserved, the better. A lot of stuff that was on the web a while back is no longer... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2018-02-22 06:47 Xibalba (ENiGMA 1/2) can serve via HTTP including batch. AFAIK, g00r00 is/has adding a similar thing to Mystic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poopootoad · 2018-02-22 20:56 It would still be nice to be able to browse lists on there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poopootoad · 2018-02-22 20:58 I might not even necessarily download from the BBS. It can possibly be seen as just another way of finding stuff then getting it elsewhere. (Kind of like what I do after browsing through book recommendations on Amazon.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2018-02-22 22:01 You can browse files on the board already -- including with filters. Do you mean the ability to download a file listing (I have that on my ToDo) or in your web browser (Not sure if I'll ever do that since it's not really BBS at that point). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poopootoad · 2018-02-23 03:37 I mean a file listing. The way things are on Amiga City is what I would emulate in your position. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2018-02-23 04:32 Got a link? I'm still not clear what you're referring to. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poopootoad · 2018-02-23 04:45 Like so: https://i.imgur.com/kRlTpJq.png Basically something like `ls -l`. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2018-02-23 06:11 Ah. I'm curious what you're after with this sort of listing vs the current style with full diz/etc. Just more entries per screen? Would be easy to add though ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poopootoad · 2018-02-23 07:00 Mainly more entries per screen but knowing a few other data is also nice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2018-02-24 23:46 what types of files are you looking for ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poopootoad · 2018-02-25 15:51 Mainly retrocomputing stuff but also textfiles.com types of things
