Are there still BBS related publications? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2018-01-22 14:31 Are there still any publications (e.g., magazines, newsletters, etc.) printed or electronic that cover BBSing? I've seen some recent publications that had a special one-time article on BBSing, but I was wondering if there are still any that cover it regularly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- G_Porgie · 2018-01-22 15:05 There was only really one major magazine for BBS enthusiasts [Boardwatch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boardwatch). Even it really served more the larger, commercial BBS industry than the thousands of small independents. Nowadays, BBSs are a bit of a novelty, the same way that /r/retrobattlestations are a novelty. The technology existed to deal with limitations of the day that we really don't have in the internet age now, but they are still very cool for those of us that grew up living and breathing BBSs. I don't think the subject is interesting enough to enough people that an entire magazine could be supported (heck, I don't think it was even popular enough back in its hayday for the magazine to appeal to more than a pretty specific group of enthusiasts). I would say if there is anything like articles for BBSs, the subject would be rolled into something larger, like a retro-technology section of an existing mag. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WikiTextBot · 2018-01-22 15:05 **Boardwatch** Boardwatch Magazine, informally known as Boardwatch, was initially published and edited by Jack Rickard. Founded in 1987, it began as a publication for the online Bulletin Board Systems of the 1980s and 1990s and ultimately evolved into a trade magazine for the Internet service provider (ISP) industry in the late 1990s. The magazine was based in Lakewood, Colorado, and was published monthly. The magazine included advertisements for BBSes, BBS software and hardware, and editorials about the BBS scene. *** ^[ [^PM](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=kittens_from_space) ^| [^Exclude ^me](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiTextBot&me ssage=Excludeme&subject=Excludeme) ^| [^Exclude ^from ^subreddit](https://np.reddit.com/r/bbs/about/banned) ^| [^FAQ ^/ ^Information](https://np.reddit.com/r/WikiTextBot/wiki/index) ^| [^Source](https://github.com/kittenswolf/WikiTextBot) ^| [^Donate](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiTextBot/wiki/donate) ^] ^Downvote ^to ^remove ^| ^v0.28 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2018-01-22 16:49 Thanks for the reply. I would be very surprised if there were still publications that were devoted entirely to BBSing. However, I wonder if there are any that have a regular column that covers BBSing. I've recently seen some special "one-off" articles in publications, but not any regular columns. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- McDutchie · 2018-01-22 20:51 [FidoNews](http://www.filegate.net/fidonews/), the FidoNet newsletter, is still being published every week. Some issues even have a story in them. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-01-22 23:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2018-01-23 00:16 Thanks for the tip. I also saw a link to FidoGazette on that web page (http://www.filegate.net/fidogaz/fidogaz.htm). Is FidoGazette the same or a different newsletter? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- McDutchie · 2018-01-23 00:19 That would be a different one. I didn't even know about it, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2018-01-23 11:34 You can subscribe to both at http://www.filegate.net/sub.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2018-01-25 08:25 that's a bot you are replying to. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BRElover · 2018-03-14 20:25 Wow. Fidonet. I remember back in the day when I actually got most of my BBS news and world news from there. HA. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- McDutchie · 2018-03-14 20:41 Back in the early 90s I moderated two echos, MACCOMM and MACSW. Good old days.
