I am in over my head. Best way to proceed? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theholyblack · 2018-01-17 00:24 So I have been running synchronet 3.16 on a windows 2003 server VPS. It stopped working and I figured i'd try to get it back up, the server was loaded with malware, and cleaning it out got the bbs back up and running but the web interface (ecweb3) no longer connects through ftelnet. The BBS is just for like a dozen friends of mine who are not super tech savvy and without a browser based option, nobody is going to log in and play doors. I've noticed that a lot of the bbses out there are now running syncterm embedded in their homepage and some type of new interface. (ecweb4?Bootstrap?) but it also shows that all of those boards are also running SBBS 3.17a and I cant seem to find a place to download it. Anyone want to give me the lowdown? bbs.theholyblack.com if you want to see what im working with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2018-01-17 15:17 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- electronicchicken · 2018-01-17 21:48 I think I've already answered your questions over email, but for posterity: There are Windows-based instructions on updating to unstable (3.17a) [on the Synchronet wiki](http://wiki.synchro.net/install:win#upgrade_existing_316c). I would advise skipping the "To update the remaining javascript files" step, and the one following that; following this course would be extremely tedious. Skip ahead to the "You may also download and extract the run-time files" step. In the [sbbs_run.zip](ftp://vert.synchro.net/Synchronet/sbbs_run.zip) archive you'll find an 'exec' directory; open that directory, copy its contents, and paste them into your local 'exec' directory. This will replace various Javascript files and Baja source files, and subdirectories containing same. The new web interface you've seen on some other boards is probably [this one](https://github.com/echicken/synchronet-web-v4), which is the replacement for ecwebv3. The telnet client embedded on the main page is [fTelnet](https://github.com/rickparrish/ftelnet). [SyncTerm](http://syncterm.bbsdev.net/) is a stand-alone desktop application. You are not currently using ecwebv3, which is good. Nobody should use it. What you have on your site right now is the old/stock/'runemaster' web UI, which is adequate for many purposes, but has some outdated components to it now. It can be customized to look a bit more modern, but out of the box it really looks and smells like the year 2005, at which point in time I'm sure it was the bee's knees. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- electronicchicken · 2018-01-17 22:08 Regarding support resources, I'll add that people should start by searching the [Synchronet Wiki](http://wiki.synchro.net/). There are also the [older documentation pages](http://synchro.net/docs/index.htm) which have not all been ported over to the wiki yet. I wouldn't spend a lot of time there. The wiki has [this to say](http://wiki.synchro.net:howto:support) about getting support. DOVE-Net is the best place to go (and is ultimately where you're going if you pursue the USENET or FidoNet options). The Yahoo! Group should be disregarded. A few people monitor it, but it just sucks. \#synchronet on irc.synchro.net is a viable option for support. Pop in, ask your question, and keep your IRC client connected. You might not get an answer immediately, or within an hour, or within several hours - then again, you might get help right away. Don't ask if anyone's around, don't ask if you can ask a question, just ask your question. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theholyblack · 2018-01-18 15:30 Thanks, I'm sure I will be making plenty of use of these resources in the next steps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theholyblack · 2018-01-18 15:31 Thanks, this makes things much clearer. I just want it to be simple for people to use.
