Worldgroup/MajorBBs or TBBS games on another BBS? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloverskull · 2017-12-16 09:30 Hey guys, I’ve always been intrigued by MajorBBS games (wtlord, majormud) as well as some tbbs games (legends, bandwarz) and was wondering if anyone ever thought about what might be required as some kind of abstraction layer for existing bbses to make something like this a possibility. I know basically nothing about these bbs softwares but would love to be able to play these games on, say, mystic or synchronet. Anyone know how these function differently than a traditional doorsys door? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- belaoxmyx · 2017-12-16 09:49 For the Galacticomm software, depends on the version of MBBS/Worldgroup. Early MajorBBS, the games were compiled in directly, then in later versions and on Worldgroup they evolved into 286/protected mode windows-style DLLs. Not like door games which were usually standalone single-instance MSDOS/640K executables with serial port access. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tele-arena · 2017-12-20 15:48 All the MajorBBS/Worldgroup modules rely heavily on the BBS software itself so I doubt there's an easy way to do an abstraction layer. But you could ask Dan Spain about it. http://arcticzone- hosting.net/worldgroup/forums Probably the easiest way to accomplish the "best of both worlds" idea is to run Synchronet and MajorBBS/WG in a VM. It's possible to pass users between the two via rlogin. I know there are some boards out there that are doing this but I can't remember their names. I think there are posts about it in the forums linked above. Also, you might check out this site for files: http://major.butt.care/index.php ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloverskull · 2017-12-20 18:37 Sweet, thanks. My unstated goal was to run these games on a headless linux server, which is how I host my current BBS. So, if there's any way I can figure out a method to do this... :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- danielspain · 2018-02-26 02:03 sorry so late, someone pointed me to this post. I actually wrote a standalone version of the game in C, nothing fancy just telnet into it on X port and play the game. With this method the idea is to do away with the need for WG and offer it on any bbs software that supports outgoing telnet connections. In the future I may do up an rlogin terminal option for it but for now just simple telnet works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cloverskull · 2018-02-26 07:15 Oh sounds very cool. Where can I check this out? Do you have a github page?
