Programmer discovers his long lost BBS games reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2017-10-03 21:33 Probably the best game ever written for BBS Express Pro! (the software that the Basement runs) is Nebula Elite! This is a space empire game that was written in the early 90s for the Atari 8 bit BBS. The other day one of the game's authors connected to my BBS. He was ecstatic that he remembered his old password on my system. When I restored my BBS in July of this year, I also restored a user log from 1992. The author then informed me that he was excited to show his sons some of his games on my BBS. You see, back in 2012 he had all of his classic computers/game consoles/and game source code in his basement when Hurricane Sandy came crashing through. He lost everything and thought he would never have the chance to show his sons his creations. But the other night, the subject of his games came up again. This time he decided to google Atari BBSs and saw that my BBS was back online. He connected to my BBS, saw his games were there, and now both he and his sons will play Nebula Elite! For him, he will play it for the first time since the 90s. For his sons, it will be the very first time that they play it. This prompted me to start a Nebula Elite tournament on my BBS. It's a pretty involved space empire game. Anyone whoever wants to join, stop by the Basement BBS (see http://basementbbs.ddns.net for details) and sign up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lagmonst3r · 2017-10-03 22:34 Awesome story! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sdgoat · 2017-10-03 22:41 Need to get Trade Wars going... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- codeaholic · 2017-10-03 23:16 As an old C= guy that started BBS'ing in '84, I always loved the feel and unique qualities of Atari boards. Thanks for the share, and looking fwd to checking out your BBS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WhippingStar · 2017-10-04 02:50 I remember that one! I loved my Atari 8-bits! I had a TODAMIS BBS for a while. Have any ATASCII movies? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kirkman14 · 2017-10-04 02:58 I second that. I'd love to hear from anyone who has more ATASCII animations that I could add to my collection at [AtasciiTube](http://breakintochat.com/collections/atascii/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WhippingStar · 2017-10-04 03:07 I never thought I'd see the classic "Journey Into The Toilet" again. You've made an old man cry today. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2017-10-04 03:25 I believe there's some in the file sections. The BBS has lots of ATASCII, though. You just need to login with a term program that supports ATASCII to see it. Syncterm is a good term program that supports ATASCII and is available on all major platforms. It's availabl at http://syncterm.bbsdev.net/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2017-10-04 03:45 I was around back then too. Back in 1984 most Atari users would post messages in all caps and Commodore users typically would post messages in upper and lowercase. Therefore, Atari users would usually razz anyone who would post a message in lowercase as a "Commie" (a.k.a. a Commodore user). I stumbled on this fact when I logged into an Atari BBS with a friend's Coleco Adam. I posted a message in upper and lowercase and someone said something to me like, "You're alright even though you're a Commie! Your lowercase gives you away!" They were surprised to learn that I was logged in with a Coleco Adam. Eventually, Atari users dropped the all uppercase as well. It just cracks me up when people would say that all caps is the same as yelling. That means back in the early days of BBSing, we all yelled at each other! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dragotha · 2017-10-04 14:34 Hell yea! I set up my own WWIV BBS just to play more Trade Wars. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2017-10-11 13:33 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2017-10-12 01:48 bbs is down ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnPolka · 2017-10-12 05:10 No. The BBS was up. Someone else must have been on. The BBS is a single user system. If you cannot connect, then try again a little later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sburggsx · 2017-12-08 22:35 This is a great story. This subreddit has had me find my old QIC tape backups that may or may not contain the BBS I shut down in 94 or 95. I would love to be able to pull the info off those tapes just to see if I still have it all. You make me jealous.
