Anyone using HS/Link? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevinlamonte · 2017-01-16 21:38 I have started a project to implement X/Y/Zmodem/Kermit in Java, very loosely based on the protocols in Qodem. The goal here is to have a cleaner codebase that is easily plugged into more modern environments. For example, I would like to be able to do something like "grab the file test served by Internet Kermit Server foo.bar.com (using CKermit) and path bar" via: URL url = new URL("kermit://foo.bar.com/bar/test"); InputStream data = url.openStream(); The question is: does anyone use [HS/Link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HS/Link) anymore? I really like it, and its code is in the public domain now. I could probably figure out the protocol and get it re-implemented. But would it be worth it? (And also sorry for the no replies tonight, I'm posting right as I need to be busy on something, will respond to anyone tomorrow morning.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2017-01-17 06:19 as far as i know, nobody uses hslink and nobody wants to use it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevinlamonte · 2017-01-17 13:15 Thanks for checking. Reading the code, beyond the nifty-looking screen and chat support it seems to be very similar to Kermit with sliding windows and long packets at the protocol level. Not sure what new function we would get since I am already going for a full 1986-spec compliant Kermit implementation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- f15sim · 2017-01-17 19:23 Ignore mro. When it comes to anything BBS related, he makes Eeyore look optimistic and manic as hell. Good luck on your project. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2017-01-21 17:16 i'm just telling the truth, gene. and i know lot more about anything bbsing related than you do, not that it matters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2017-01-21 17:18 if you want to play around with it as an exercise, then go ahead and learn from it. but back in the bbs day people toyed with using it but it wasnt really a protocol people gravitated towards. and in todays age people dont download much and y/zmodem is working okay for transfers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- f15sim · 2017-01-26 19:07 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2017-01-28 19:02 insert whatever you want, wherever you want. you're just a poser ---------------------------------------------------------------------- f15sim · 2017-01-28 21:43 I could explain at length how incorrect you are, but I lack both the time and the crayons. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2017-01-28 21:46 it's your story, tell it how you want to tell it, poser. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2017-02-10 05:37 I can't help you much with HS/Link, but if you proceed with this project and make it OSS I'd love to check it out. At some point, I'd like to implement X/Y/Z in ES6 JavaScript. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevinlamonte · 2017-02-10 13:53 Project is already started over at https://github.com/klamonte/jermit. Xmodem and Ymodem are minimally working ('qodem' UI is a little buggy). Kermit is next, Zmodem last. Hopefully going to get it wrapped up by the end of the year. License is MIT so feel free to bang away. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2017-02-11 18:04 Great! I'll follow this, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KenDB3 · 2017-02-21 04:07 So, crazy question, could Jermit be used as an external version of Kermit? IE, something that could sit server side. I'm still using a 16-bit version of Kermit for DOS on my Synchronet BBS on a Win32 machine (which works) but I've been looking to replace it. I can't find much of anything for Windows that is open source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kevinlamonte · 2017-02-21 13:12 Not crazy at all, that is actually the plan. :) Jermit will have a C-Kermit workalike that does both standard transfers and Internet Kermit Server. Alas it will be several months at least to get there, but in the end we will have a new cross- platform Kermit that will hopefully be easy for someone else to translate to .NET, Go, etc.
