The Lost Civilization of Dial-Up Bulletin Board Systems reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Inode1 · 2016-11-05 20:17 Man this is nostalgic for me. I grew up on BBS's back in the day. I met some of my best friends on there. As much as technology has advanced I really wish the internet wouldn't have displaced BBS's like it did. There was just something special about knowing the people you where interacting with where local, not on the other side of the planet. It made the world seem so much smaller. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- condurre · 2016-11-06 02:33 Agreed. Not only were they local, but they also usually knew something about the computers, modems, etc that they used to call in with. This allowed for fellow computer geeks to converge on a pizza place and meet in person to geek out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Inode1 · 2016-11-06 02:45 That and the swap meets. I can't remember how many I went to, but that's how I got my first sound card, CD ROM and several other things. Even landed an internship at an isp when I as 16 because of BBS's. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slip_Freudian · 2016-11-06 04:05 Then if you don't know about this. Peek at this: http://www.textfiles.com I miss my Volksmodem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AtariBasic · 2016-11-06 04:07 Don't get me wrong: I love all the things the Internet has brought us. I love being able to literally say "how's traffic on my way to work" and getting an answer based on real-time data. But I'm deeply nostalgic for the era of packet tossers, DESQview multitasking, and arguing for the 6574893765482nd time why Renegade was just a total ripoff of Telegard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Inode1 · 2016-11-06 04:31 Omg thats amazing. How did I not know about this. I forgot all about file sharing on BBS's. Makes me feel old. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slip_Freudian · 2016-11-06 05:00 The article didn't do enough justice for me. It was cool and all but he starts from early 90's. At any rate, have fun with trade wars! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eRetArDeD · 2016-11-06 15:09 Renegade was a superior fork of Telegard, I think. Also Telix was good, but Terminate was better ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- captadv · 2016-11-06 16:54 WWIV still in active development. http://www.wwivbbs.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- G_Porgie · 2016-11-07 14:40 He briefly mentioned the early start of BBSs with the 1970's Chicago blizzard. To be honest, the very late 80's and early 90's is probably when most people got their start BBSing. That's about the time when people really started getting home computers and modems and second telephone lines were becoming inexpensive enough for people to grab. "Othernet" FidoNet Technical Networks and High-School BBSs were also cropping up everywhere in that time (I started BBSing in high school in 1990 myself). Sure, there were BBSes back long before the 1990s (just as there was the internet back in the 1970s and 1980s), but for most people, that time period is really not all that relate-able. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Slip_Freudian · 2016-11-07 15:31 Agree. I was expecting a little more. It's all in perspective. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SDreefsurfer · 2017-01-05 16:47 Can anyone please direct me on how to look up old, (mid to late 90's), BBS call signs from the San Diego 619 area? Thank you.
