Choosing a Backend/General Questions reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GreatOneFreak · 2016-10-31 17:08 Hey r/BBS, I'm a relatively competent programmer looking into starting a BBS for a group of my friends/family. I don't really know enough about BBS make an educated choice. What I'm looking for is best BBS that is stable for ubuntu v16.04, has SSH/FTP support, and the ability to disable doors/games. So board itself and file sharing is all I care about. I saw some options like synchro, mystic, etc but I'm not too sure which is best suited. My other questions are about the protocols (I only have basic knowledge here). Would I make a specific login group that only has privileges to run the BBS software? How do I handle security here? If anyone could help me out here or direct me to a good resource it would be greatly appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2016-10-31 19:20 "Best" is always going to be subjective. Most of the popular packages that are in development will run on linux. I suggest checking out synchronet and mystic. They're both in active development and support telnet/ssh and transfers via the BBS and FTP. Security is managed by the BBSs, from what I understand - although non of my boards have a transfer section at this time so I can't get too detailed with that specific functionality.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GreatOneFreak · 2016-11-03 16:34 Thanks. I took you advice and have been messing around with mystic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2016-11-03 17:55 Awesome! Let us know how it goes!
