Terminal Program - Wargames Movie? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- turndownfowut · 2016-08-13 21:00 Can someone remind me what the name of the terminal program was where you could do something to make it act like the WHOPR from the movie Wargames? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bakb0ne · 2016-08-13 21:27 telnet wopr.absd.org or https://codepen.io/deluxive/pen/lxEGs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- turndownfowut · 2016-08-13 21:40 I mean the Terminal Program you ran, like Telix. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JokerCharlie · 2016-08-14 08:55 Do you mean something like the war dialer? Or are you talking more about the terminal session that emulates the WOPR? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- balkenbrij · 2016-08-14 13:41 i think there was none in the movie but scripted (see http://imsai.net/movies/wargames.htm ) For actual terminal programs i think you had a couple to choose from listed [here](http://www.digitalresearch.biz/CPM-FAQ.HTM#Q14). Personally i've only used kermit at later times, i'm not sure how popular that was. e: from that link; Mike, with his cohort in programming, Steve Grummette, had written some code to provide the illusion that Matthew Broderick was actually entering data and getting output on the monitor. In fact, the IKB-1 keyboard could be programmed with a few keystrokes to output an ASCII sequence whenever any key was subsequently pressed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ebookit · 2016-08-14 19:36 It was on a modified Altair using a text to speech adapter and some kind of graphics in a terminal emulator. I think it was special effects. When you talk about terminal programs like Telix, there used to be a DOS program that turned text to speech for DOS to work with Telix, QModem, Procomm Plus and others because I worked in a college computer lab back in the early 1990s and had blind students we set it up for. I think the program was called Flipper, but it did not work in graphics mode like when Windows was loaded or the app used CGA/EGA instead of Text mode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paco_Smithereens · 2016-08-15 20:58 One of the things you will notice in the terminal sequences is that the cursor keeps disappearing, which isn't normal for any terminal software I've ever used: http://imgur.com/a/S68Fq I suspect it wasn't terminal software at all and the cursor was fairly badly emulated by the computer program which simulated one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grazzt519 · 2016-08-15 21:44 I believe the software that was called "terminator" (or something really similiar) had a secret key combo (maybe alt-something or a fn key?) and then prompted you for a password, if you entered joshua, it would take you to wardialer software. If you meant something that acted like whopr, then Ive never heard of that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- turndownfowut · 2016-08-15 23:33 That's exactly what I was referring to. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grazzt519 · 2016-08-16 18:25 I just installed terminator2, and from my vague 20+ year memory, I think its the correct software, I just dont remember the key combo to bring up the password prompt, so if you ever figure it out, do share. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- turndownfowut · 2016-08-17 00:18 Can you post a screenshot of Terminator2? How are you running it, DOSBox? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- turndownfowut · 2016-08-17 00:24 I think this was it: http://www.terminate.com/tour/tour-host.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grazzt519 · 2016-08-17 11:58 Yeah Im running it in dosbox, and I dont think it was terminate, but it might have been. So many term programs back then, all looking the same. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- braxbrax · 2016-08-21 06:31 Here's a video on Youtube of [Terminator 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jcpR4meElI) comms program.
