Question to BBS community. Anyone use reddit as the front door to their BBS? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- L1th0 · 2016-07-23 00:39 Question to BBS community. Anyone use reddit as the front door to their BBS? Have you tried posting games scores, news, events, info and make reddit a way to advertise/promote your BBS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2016-07-23 22:52 i have seen people try it in the past but those bbses arent around now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DaiTengu · 2016-07-24 06:50 I'm slowly rebuilding my BBS. I lost it about 4-5 years ago in a hard drive crash (grumble, backups, grumble), and got bit by the bug again recently. I'm actually considering doing the opposite and bringing reddit into my BBS. I'm considering building a door/addon that will display the first page of reddit, or any subreddit you choose. That will be down the road, though. I need to get the thing to a state where I"m comfortable accepting callers first. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2016-07-24 19:16 the only thing i could see being somewhat useful is creating a reddit -> bbs bridge where msg area posts are posted on reddit and vice versa ---------------------------------------------------------------------- L1th0 · 2016-07-24 21:29 I can import Reddit subs to Synchronet using Reddit's RSS function and Synchronet's RSS import utility. I would like to export Synchronet Reddit/message area replys back to Reddit. That is the difficult part.   If this existed, then I could post a message on Reddit and then people could reply in Synchronet's message area and it would show up on the Reddit sub. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShooterJennings · 2016-07-28 00:49 Problem here is (obviously) that you would have to be able to login as that user and make a post that would go to their reddit account. Theres ways of doing this but not ones that wouldnt make the users feel uncomfortable. That being said, you could create a new subreddit for your BBS, and then write it so that all the posts happen under your BBS account in that BBS subreddit, and the user who made the post or the comment would be credited at the top or bottom of their message. You get what I'm saying? So for me /r/bitsunrise could be made of sole redditors, and also redditors under an account like bitsunrise_reddit which would make all the posts that are made from the bbs. Edit: upon thinking about it, the subreddit is not needed. It is just having one 'gateway' reddit account that would be posting to and from your BBS and crediting the user who wrote it by their name on the BBS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- L1th0 · 2016-07-28 04:56 Good Point about a gateway account. That's how it would have to work. Maybe good for posting BBS news, but not so much for user comments. Thanks for explaining that. It makes alot more sense now about how it would work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- electronicchicken · 2016-08-05 07:17 I arrived at the same conclusion when thinking about it in the past. I suspect things would get messy if users were posting in both directions (while using one account to post to reddit). There's probably a sensible and secure way to do it right, but I'd have to be way more excited about the idea to put in the effort. If you do end up using the RSS import utility, I would advise avoiding imports to networked subs, or to at least test it thoroughly before doing so. My main concern when writing that thing was that it might import dupe messages. I took steps to avoid that, but that was a long time ago and I'm paranoid. On the other hand, a proper reddit-specific module could be created for Sync rather than relying on RSS. Lack of an HTTPS client was a roadblock to things like that in the past, but we have that as of a year or two ago. Depending on what sort of functionality you're looking for, I might be interested in putting something together (eventually).
