Welcome ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2016-07-18 02:20 this is a heartwarming tale. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- denzuko · 2016-07-21 13:20 So, got to point out that BBS here does not mean 2chan it means pre- aol/html bulletin board software. Think email, irc, and usenet before there was email, irc and usenet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- denzuko · 2016-07-21 13:21 yeah, if it's a *chan bbs I could believe that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2016-07-23 22:56 bbses do not predate email. also i think usenet is early 80s. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- denzuko · 2016-07-23 23:42 Yes and no. If we're meaing email as electronic mail(rfc821 and rfc822) then Ward Christensen with his CBBS beat it by four years, with a few years later usenet UUCP founding at duke university and independently Fidonet's echomail being conceived among a few sysops in California. As for rfc733 text messages over ftp and telnet then while, yes this kind of email dates to the later 60's but was only available to ARPAnet members which not a whole lot had access to in the 70's and 80's unless your a student at one of the participating universities or a DOD contractor. ARPAnet and its related protocols which we take for granted these did not really become a major influence until the public started to having big box ISP like compuserve/aol/prodigy offer ppp, nntp and smtp/pop3 services in the later 80's and early 90's and even by this time most of us still dialed into a local board or unix shell account to send email, download files, chat on irc, or join in usenet.
