Cedar Rapids, IA BBS's 1991-1995 reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ABeardedTerran · 2016-07-07 05:14 I know this is an extremely long shot but I was wondering if anyone had a copy of a program I wrote back in the early-mid 90's, called RPG Character Maker. It was hosted on a few Cedar Rapids, IA based BBS's like Aardvark's Aquarium, Cygnus X1, The Fourth Demension, Hawkeye RBBS, The Hawk's Nest, to think of a few old favorite BBS's. Man I cannot believe how easily I could remember those names. I wrote it in BASIC and remember "borrowing" my friends BASIC Compiler, and created a self-executing version of it. So it may exist in both .BAS and .EXE formats. I can get access to a floppy drive if you maybe had backups from back in the day. I doubt any SysOp's had CD burners around that time, except for one but sadly he passed away a few years back. Again I know it's a long shot, I have a better chance of winning the lotto. But I thought that I'd try. Thanks in advance for your time. And if any former BBS's from that time/place, remember the pizza/bowling parties? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FozzTexx · 2016-07-07 14:33 You might want to ask on /r/RetroBattlestations too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paco_Smithereens · 2016-07-07 14:45 For what platform? DOS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2016-07-07 15:49 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ABeardedTerran · 2016-07-07 16:20 Yes, it was a DOS application. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lubujackson · 2016-07-07 21:11 I'd check out http://textfiles.com/ or http://archive.org. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ABeardedTerran · 2016-07-07 21:50 No. I didn't make a PS game, at least that's what that link shows me. But thank you just the same. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wekalek · 2016-07-08 03:36 Heh.. We had a "The Fourth Dimension" (Renegade out of Lino Lakes, IIRC) and "Hawkeye" (VBBS) in 612 as well in the early-mid 90s. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2016-07-10 21:16 what was the filename ---------------------------------------------------------------------- antisymmetryco · 2016-07-11 04:55 I totally remember this app, I think I had it at the time, but I don't anymore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ABeardedTerran · 2016-07-12 17:52 This was about 25 years ago when I was 13, I cannot remember sadly. I feel confident I uploaded to a few local boards in both .bas and .exe format when I got a compiler. My best guess is rpgmaker.exe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2016-07-13 23:52 if you give me some text strings to search for i can look further. i searched for rpg and didnt come up with anything you mentioned. i probably have one of the largest file collections for bbs/dos/abandonware programs and games ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ABeardedTerran · 2016-07-14 04:42 rpg character maker by joshua feickert, is about all I can remember. I knew it was a long shot. I just thought maybe some former SysOp from the 319 area might have backups of their system. I know it was on Aardvark's Aquairium out of Central City. The SysOp was Keith Sippy but he passed a few years back. It was just a simple, enter a name, and it would randomly generate stats for strength, intelligence, charisma, etc.. super simple and nothing fancy at all. Completely text driven. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- denzuko · 2016-07-24 00:18 I vaguely remember seeing that one on my board back in the day. Sadly I do not have archives from that time. Sent it all to Jason Scott long ago so either textfiles.com or archive.org has it somewhere. Though it might help if we knew a bit more about the author, like did release his app to one of the shareware distributors, was he a member of the Association of Software Professionals? Was IowaNetEast the only board he posted to? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ABeardedTerran · 2016-07-24 07:49 I'm the author. I just uploaded it to a few local BBS's in Cedar Rapids, IA. I'm just feeling nostalgic, now work in DevOps, and thought it'd be neat to have a copy of the first and only program I ever wrote. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- denzuko · 2016-07-27 16:15 I here you there :) wish I could find copies of my old game and demoscene releases from my days in BASIC and MS-DOS ASM. But, I hear that War Ensemble BBS is coming back on-line and so hopefully Mike's got a good archive we can look through and even be lucky and there's a copy there. :fingers crossed: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dshafer42 · 2016-09-02 20:48 This is a blast from the past. :) I ran The Nexus in Cedar Rapids. Don't know if you uploaded it there, but I didn't keep any of the file libraries anyway. And yeah, I definitely remember the parties. We'd go to Godfather's Pizza at the Town & Country Shopping Center, then downstairs to the bowling alley (which no longer exists). I remember after one party, a few of us went to see The Lawnmower Man (just released in theaters); it was rated R and some of us weren't 17 yet, so Keith bought our tickets. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ABeardedTerran · 2016-09-04 03:37 Ha yes, I think I know you! I cannot remember who had multiple telephone lines at their house, but I remember a few of us thinking it would be fun to call all their lines one after another like the ending of the movie. I ran The Warp Zone BBS for a bit. I cannot recall all the places I uploaded my program. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AutoModerator · 2016-11-18 07:50 This comment was auto-moderated since it was just a link with no text. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.
