What's the deal with the Fidonet node list? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paco_Smithereens · 2015-10-21 23:20 So I'm looking through the latest Fidonet node list, and practically none of the systems listed are connectable. I have to believe, given how many of these are dead, or presumably dead, that many of them have been dead awhile. Is the Fidonet node list no longer weeded out? I live in Tucson. I was curious if there were any boards here. I found two in the nodelist: * ,701,Smoke_Signals_BBS,Tucson_AZ,Lee_Benson,-Unpublished- ,300,CM,XR,V32b,V42b,V34,FTN,UWC,ITN:ss-bbs.dns2go.com:51 * The_Babble_BBS,Tucson_AZ,Dane_Beko,-Unpublished- ,300,CM,XA,IFT,ITN,IBN,INA:babblebbs.no-ip.org I can find no other reference to these online, and I assume that last bit is the supposed to be the board's hostname. There are thousands of boards on here; it would have been encouraging to believe this many systems still exist but that appears to not be the case (and note, I know about telnetbbsguide.com to find boards; I was more curious as to how active/large Fidonet still is.) Can someone explain if and when any of these will fall off the list? (Sorry, it's been years since I've been actively involved with Fidonet, and I don't know how this works now in the Internet age.) Secondly, what's the deal with [this site](http://www.fidonet.org/)? Links are broken and go nowhere, bits haven't been updated (see "Active Nodes" as an example). The Canadian site still seems to have updated data. Is Fidonet basically dead except for the few boards I see that still carry echoes? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- f15sim · 2015-10-22 19:56 There's actually a lot of active systems, but it appears that (at least in that region) the NC isn't doing a good job of keeping the nodelist current. You might want to email Janis Kracht at the FileGate (http://www.filegate.net/) - she may know what the situation is with that region/net. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tehtaken · 2015-10-24 08:50 there are a lot of active echomail bbss but they do a bad job at keeping things updated now in fido. its not like it was in the 90s and with internet is hard to tell if a bbs is down. there are still hundreds active in the usa and thousands in europe i wouldnt expect them to be fixed anytime soon unless you tell someone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- L1th0 · 2015-10-25 03:32 Hi, there are still boards in Tucson. You can find active boards using the Synchronet BBS List: http://www.synchro.net/sbbslist.html or the telnet bbs guide: http://www.telnetbbsguide.com/ .Just do a search for Tucson and you will hit some. Hope this helps! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2015-10-25 21:33 there's a lot of old dead systems on the fidonet nodelist. not only THAT, but a year or so ago i was added BACK to the fidonet nodelist (and i stopped carrying it 10 years ago). they really need to clean out the old systems and delete the dead msg echos. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- things4thinkers · 2015-10-26 16:57 Wow this is so random. I live in Tucson az, I used to run a bbs back in 93-96 or so. I was on fidonet, my board was called "The Pirates Cove". Smoke Signals BBS was run by Lee Benson as listed. He lived one block north of me. He was an elderly gentlemen, he passed away around '94 or '95
