Just found this sub, awesome memories. Two words... US Robotics. reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DrMantizToboggan · 2015-10-17 12:40 I was the bad ass of my group of friends because I saved up all my money from mowing lawns to buy the Sportster 28.8k and then the daddy of them all, the 56.6k Courier (which I still have). I don't know why I posted this, just nostalgia overload. My favorite board was Davy Jones Locker in Worcester, MA. Used to pirate all my Sierra games from them. Good times... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PhotoJim99 · 2015-10-17 14:35 I ran a Supra primarily (and when I ran my first BBS in '85, US Robotics wasn't it yet - Hayes still was, but I ran a Pocket Modem because it was what I could afford :) ). But yes, Couriers are pretty hot modems. I've got a nice pile of them now that they're so cheap. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DrMantizToboggan · 2015-10-17 16:45 My dad was the one who got me into being a techie. He had Hayes modems before we got our USRs. My poor mother wondered why we had three phone lines and she only had a husband and a son. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- commiecat · 2015-10-17 19:07 Diamond SupraMax -- I used those for a while. I think they had a bonded mode (AKA "shotgun") to double up your bandwidth if you had the extra line and the BBS/ISP supported it. I was big on Diamond products back in the day. They had some great 3dfx video cards and [Aureal 3D](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A3D) sound cards. Pretty sure my Celeron 300A home-build had Diamond modem, video, and sound all together at one point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mpfjr · 2015-10-18 06:03 I still have my courier v.everything that usr gave me for my bbs in exchange for a mention on the login screen. Has a metal badge on it that says not for resale. I'll never let it go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KismetTheFrog · 2015-10-18 06:07 Oh yeah, US Robotics modems were awesome. Good speaker on the sportster, too. I had an external one and you could hear every chirp and squawk. I started with a Hayes 2400 baud modem that came as part of a bundle with Prodigy, sold through Sears in the late 80s. Got into BBSing when a tech support guy from Sears came over to help troubleshoot problems on my Laser XT. He had to download files from an external site and I was truly amazed by this. Next, I saw a friend had some terminal software on their computer for connecting to The Crown Jewel BBS in Lake Wales, Florida. I would log on there and play The Pit regularly. Was hooked ever since. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goretsky · 2015-10-22 02:56 Hello, `ATS11=65` for fast dialing. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
