Browser based bbs? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- royalbarnacle · 2015-07-01 22:43 So in this post-modem era telnetting is the usual approach and a browser-based telnet client simplifies this further. But are there any actual browser-based bbs' out there? Like written in a php, js, ruby etc? I know of [this abandoned project](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenTelegard/2) and apparently there are or were some bbs' like this in Asia (ptt I think was one?) Why? Well Id like a BBS experience with the whole ansi/text retro feel, door games, keyboard (not mouse) controls, emulated screen display speed, but while still being able to incorporate some of the advantages a browser can offer over real telnet, such as images, simple file transfer, links, flexible screen size, variable fonts, etc. It'd just be a fun project I think. I've tried the opposite approach and tried to fake it (like make a normal site to look bbsy or a template for WordPress etc) but these don't come anywhere near convincing enough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grassmunk · 2015-07-02 03:28 You could probably use something like this: https://github.com/jquast/x84 or there's always flash based telnet clients. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rastervision · 2015-07-03 07:28 I wonder if there is an HTML5 telnet client? I couldn't find one in a quick search. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Three_Eighty-Six · 2015-07-03 15:41 Technically, the message forum found on many larger websites are BBSes. They have public message bases and they have private messaging (local email) between users. You have to have an account. Sometimes they even have chat and games. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- calladus · 2015-07-03 21:20 Sooo.... Reddit? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- royalbarnacle · 2015-07-05 20:24 Yeah but giving one of these a retro visual overhaul is incredibly difficult. That's my whole issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- royalbarnacle · 2015-07-05 20:26 I didn't just want a browser based telnet client though. I want to merge some modern web functionality with an old school retro bbs feel and functionality. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2015-07-07 21:50 Perhaps this would interest you: https://jcs.org/notaweblog/2015/04/02/creating_a_bbs_in_2015/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShooterJennings · 2015-07-14 13:59 U-232 is a *nix system that has a very similar feel built for torrents. I have one setup at blockcountryrock.org for my records label. If you would like an account to check it out pm me and I'll add u ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShooterJennings · 2015-07-14 14:00 Message system is forum based tho. But u can link it to other systems. It's still mouse feel but I think you'll see the similarities that I did. I enjoyed setting this up EDIT: spelling errors ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NuSkooler · 2015-07-16 19:39 To add to this, check out this guys work on Github: https://www.npmjs.com/~mithgol For example, WebBBS @ https://www.npmjs.com/package/webbbs I think one could certainly make a fully fledged HTML5 based BBS that uses web technologies (not just web based telnet) with a BBS/ANSI/ASCII feel including FidoNet and the like. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grassmunk · 2015-07-21 04:18 I think i found what you've been looking for: https://www.ftelnet.ca/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grassmunk · 2015-07-21 04:48 There is!
