Qodem codebase is now in the public domain reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2015-05-26 20:54 This may be more interesting for the developers than the users, but I would like to announce that the qodem codebase has been placed in the public domain (or CC0 for those jurisdictions that don't recognize public domain). This is as free as one can make anything: anyone who wants to make commercial closed-source products out of this code is now legally free to do so. [Link to the qodem github repository.](https://github.com/klamonte/qodem) If you're a developer who finds something interesting and I didn't document it well enough to figure out quickly, please let me know and I will try to do better. As for why: a lot of the still-active BBS era stuff is GPL, which is great for end users. But once those authors pass away or just become uninterested, it can't live on in the future because: copyright is forever, it "taints" people ("subconscious" infringement is an actual legal thing), and this intellectual "property" garbage seems to only be getting worse. So qodem is now public domain, any of its pieces are free to be anyone's pet project in the future, and if it makes them money then fine. Or if nothing else it can be a source of WTF cautionary tales. ;-) Regarding that 1.0beta, I have spent most of my free time the last four weeks cleaning up the code and locating the final batch of loose ends. It is still another 4-8 weeks out, but will include: * Full windows support and feature parity with the Linux version. Including serial ports. * A windows installer. * About a dozen more bugs to fix. * Completely new build system, with updates to the Debian and RPM build scripts to use it. The one thing it will not have is modem support (i.e. answering the phone) for host mode. If someone out there has a couple landlines I could test with, I could probably get that in.
