Access your BBS with browser? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- intermammary_sulcus · 2014-12-02 22:00 I've been thinking of setting up a BBS on my server for a while now and today I did some searching on the net. I think setting up Synchronet would be the way to go on a Ubuntu server. My question is, can I configure it to be easily accessible with e.g. Firefox? There are some plugins, but could it be done without any plugins? Just for the ease of use for my not-so-tech-savvy friends... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FozzTexx · 2014-12-02 22:18 I'm using shellinabox [on my BBS](http://bbs.fozztexx.com) which doesn't require Flash or Java. I've tried it in quite a few browsers and it even worked on my iPad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- intermammary_sulcus · 2014-12-02 22:26 That's pretty cool. I actually searched a bit more and in [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGxXBgMqrCY) videos' comments there's a comment, that maybe I could set it up with my webserver: "Synchronet BBS software does have a Web Based frontend too it. It is possible to run the frontend via a php server BUT you still need to have your BBS up & running for it to work.... I was looking for a way to do run a the BBS software via my webserver account." What do you think, would this be maybe harder to do or should I just use the shellinabox? Does shellinabox support ansi graphics btw? Gotta have those :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2014-12-03 07:05 you can use flashterm or ftelnet both support flash and html5 and render ansi and ascii correctly flashterm.com ftelnet.ca i prefer to just use apache and ftelnet i run synchronet's web server on another port cause it sucks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- intermammary_sulcus · 2014-12-03 10:55 Cool, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- derfherdez · 2014-12-05 04:57 Thanks for the shellinabox link! It's pretty cool! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- derfherdez · 2014-12-05 07:08 On [my bbs](http://bbs.superglobalmegacorp.com/), I use [flashterm_](h ttps://web.archive.org/web/20130202083558/http://flashterm.com/) which of course needs flash to function. (It looks like it's defunct now?) Then I use a PHP5 script that I run on the server to do the socket authentication, which is required to get a flash program to talk to a socket out on the internet. And of course the BBS needs to be able to take inbound TCP/IP connections... In my crazy case I'm using Qemu on a VPS which runs OS/2 with Synchronet.. I like it this way as OS/2 still is the best way IMHO to run MS-DOS based doors in a multiuser fashion. Not that I get multiple people 'calling' but I like that it can do it. But I'll probably end up going with shellinabox. Oh ftelnet should be able to do Y-ModemG so you can actually upload and download files. At any rate, since the flashterm_ site seems to be dead, [here is the last download I have of it](http://bbs.superglobalmegacorp.com/flashterm_full.zip). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- derfherdez · 2014-12-06 05:43 Thanks again for the shellinabox hint, It can even run [tetris](http://bbs.superglobalmegacorp.com/tetris/)! This is so cool! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2014-12-20 05:39 you can use ftelnet.ca instead. it's better and has html5 also it has a generator and you can use one of his proxies so you dont have to do anything other than cut and paste. he's looking for donations to pay for his various vpses for proxies, btw
