My "part-time" BBS reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ampleofmagic · 2014-11-10 22:55 I'm starting a BBS that I call Epsilon BBS. It runs on Synchronet, and I do not run it every day. It is on from 4-? (central time) every weekday and is not on every weekend, but when it is it runs most of the day. To connect, send a telnet request at epsilonbbs.zapto.org or at 24.117.2.227. I'm not very reliable, but when I'm on it is fun. I will gladly add free door games if you have a request, but want to keep it to be mostly discussion. *update: we will try to squeeze in some more time for now on! (still not 24/7 :( ) I keep getting people logging on and trying to guess default passwords, ummmm.... Synchronet doesn't set up that way! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-11-11 04:19 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- recourse9 · 2014-11-11 20:44 Gotta ask.. why not run it 24/7? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- samalex01 · 2014-11-11 21:36 Congrats! We need more BBSes :) I have one I setup on one of my servers about a year ago, but I haven't taken any time to customize it so I never made it public. Also I'm also curious, why is it not 24/7? Are you running a dial-up BBS as well? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2014-11-12 00:51 if you're not going to put work into it, dont do it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ampleofmagic · 2014-11-12 22:32 I am just one of those weird high-school kids that runs a bbs on his grandmas computer (lol). I probably could run it a little bit longer than that, I'll try my best to do so. I am up right now and will try to keep it going. I know that teenage sysops are sometimes looked down upon (and you can see why);however, I will do my greatest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- derfherdez · 2014-11-13 11:20 You need a vps, run it on the cloud... It's not 1991 anymore.. Pretty sure you can score something cheap on lowendbox or even amazon aws. OK, I see you are a high school kid keeping the covert BBS thing alive.. lol too funny. [Synchronet can be installed as a service](http://wiki.synchro.net/monitor:ntsvcs), which will let you run it more often, unless grandma turns off the comptuer. Check out [this blog post](http://stark- oasis-2762.herokuapp.com/blog/2013/08/25/installing-synchronet-on- ec2/) on how to run Synchronet in Amazon EC2. With a bit more solid setup you should setup [DOVE-NET](http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:dove- net) and announce yourselves. You'll get some negativity because some people are old and bitter, and forget what it's like to be a teenager hiding computer stuff from grandma.. lol But I'm more so amazed that someone so young found this stuff, and got it to run. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ampleofmagic · 2014-11-13 22:39 I found a free vps host, it is called haphost; I am waiting on an admin for confirmation. I wonder if it'll work, free stuff usually has something really screwed up about it. Anyways, we are up right now. p.s. my grandma knows, I just wonder what electric bills I would run up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ampleofmagic · 2014-11-14 00:42 p.p.s I am looking into the ec2, the free version allows microprocesses for 750 hours a month. I did the math and found that there are 750.5 hours in the average month. This is great considering that I will probably need some occasional maitenance! Thank you very much! (lol, just half an hour away from being perfect!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2014-11-18 00:43 I run capitolshrill.com on an aws free instance. I pay about 60 cents a month! My year trial is up in a few months so I'll be moving it to a dedicated server at my work. The was works really well - just make sure you get the 32 bit windows server if you go the windows route. 64 bit windows won't play a lot of the old 16 bit doors. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lmorchard · 2014-11-21 17:35 Dude. Anyone looking down on a teenage sysop is an idiot. I'm like 39 now, but all the dial-up BBSes I called back in the day had teenage sysops. Most of them ran them on their folks' computers at night when no one needed the single house phone line or the computer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lmorchard · 2014-11-21 17:38 FWIW, after a year or so, it will probably cost you around $15/mo if you run on a micro instance with a Windows server OS. Until then, the free tier is great for learning how this stuff works ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mro_1337 · 2014-11-22 15:38 i tried calling it. i saw the login wasnt changed so i didnt make an acct and typed 'guest'. it then disconnected and wouldnt take any other connections running this at granny's house wont cut it. run it at home or on a paid server. a free vps will be total crap ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 9600bps · 2014-11-30 20:02 Congrats on getting the board up and running. You should invite your grandma to post on the board. Who knows? She might have fun with it, too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ampleofmagic · 2014-12-06 18:30 Thanks, I checked out your website, it's nice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ampleofmagic · 2014-12-06 22:59 I checked the logs and found 12/5 08:22:24p 0940 Hostname: census7.shodan.io I guess that explains the amount of strange people with strange ip's conneting without logging in! (Shodan is a search engine that picks up on more than just webpages, great for penetration testing!)
