My new BBS, AntiPop is up and running. Adding new stuff every day! reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Djurkinthebox · 2014-06-17 04:43 I don't have a Flash client setup for it yet, but here's the telnet link. garage.pwnz.org I'm adding new stuff every day. Mostly doors and files. Synchronet is awesome, but it's a pain in the butt to change the colors of all the prompts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- worldsfastestweiner · 2014-06-17 13:07 I was going to make an account but you are asking for way too much information. You should consider reducing the prompts or making them optional. Why do you feel you need my DOB, full real name, and where I live? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2014-06-17 13:20 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FozzTexx · 2014-06-17 14:03 It's not an authentic BBS if it doesn't ask for way too much information! I'm still blown away by how much stuff a BBS would ask for and no-one even gave it a second thought. Nerds are a friendly bunch. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- commiecat · 2014-06-17 15:21 Serious question: did you use BBSs in their hayday? Those were standard questions and a good amount of people would just make things up. * DOB: Some boards had adult sections: games, images, certain 'actions', etc. I was part of several that required actual proof of age beyond whatever you made up when registering. * Name: Boards were generally local back in the day and typically registration info was only available to sysop while you could keep a public profile that other users could see. This was the case with MBBS and might have varied by system. * Location: Again, back to it being local. Could be used to determine get together locations and also help sysops determine where callers were coming from. Just make it up if you want. There's no TOS or anything binding you to the information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Djurkinthebox · 2014-06-17 15:40 If there are any games or features I should add, please let me know. I haven't been a SysOp since the mid '90s, but I love to fulfill requests of my users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2014-06-19 00:11 SysOp of another board here... I ask for location only because I like to know where my users are calling from. I'm targeting my board to DC folk so I want to know if my flyers and whatnot are working. :) ^Yes ^I ^post ^flyers ^around ^town. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2014-06-19 00:14 I ran a WWIV board back in the day (93-2000) and every time I wanted to change something I had to recompile the whole board. :) I've been changing the menu and prompts around over at capitolshrill.com and I think Synchronet is way easier. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Djurkinthebox · 2014-06-19 04:25 I used to run Renegade back in the day (94ish). I'm seriously contemplating switching over from Synchronet. I like how easy Synchronet is to get running, but being able to change strings and colors from within the setup menu of Renegade just makes it SO much easier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Djurkinthebox · 2014-06-19 04:38 I'd love to check out your board. What's the address? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2014-06-19 05:25 I run capitolshrill.com here in Washington, DC. BTW - which matrix login are you using? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nolageek · 2014-06-19 05:49 I remember I'd ask for phone numbers back in the day so I could 'voice validate' people before I'd give them full access. Many SysOps, myself included, would have people send a copy of their ID before we'd give them access to adult areas of the boards. Good times. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Djurkinthebox · 2014-06-19 08:25 I'm using AceMatrix. I believe I found it on vert.synchro.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrnukem · 2014-07-11 05:59 That is the standard info bbsregistrations asked for from their creation in the early 1980's to their decline in the 1990's, most of the telnet BBS software is from that era with a telnet gateway module so it's built in to the registration to ask for that info, if your not comfortable just make something up as I do not think many sysops monitor that kind of info.
