Post your favorite BBSes for the month of February. reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tribute · 2013-02-22 20:30 This will be a monthly thing (closer to the first next time) so that there aren't anymore eight month lulls in posting. My idea for /r/bbs would be to post notes to the BBSes that are selected. e.g., you select 'The Void', so you login and you shoot the sysop a message saying you selected the board and give him a little info on reddit and the sub. A little cross promotion if you will. What do you guys think? Ideas? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FozzTexx · 2013-02-22 21:03 From my experience as a mod of many tiny tiny subreddits, you're pretty much going to have to lead by example. What are your favorites? Do you frequent them much? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tribute · 2013-02-22 21:28 *sad face* yeah. Well, the last Pasco BBS (813, then 727 because of the area code split) that was on-line was the Inner Sanctum. That went down in 2010 I believe. It ran TBBS which I always found odd. It was probably the most respected in my area code and he ran a program that didn't play very nice with door programs. * shrug * Now, I haven't really been too active in BBS as of late, but I do like [x-bit BBS](http://x-bit.org/ftelnet/). The board went down iirc, but came back up a few years ago. I played BRE, badly, for a year or so on the BBS. Check it out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- derfherdez · 2013-02-22 22:51 Great idea! ... Back in the day I used to love CCUG (954-726-5434).. crazy I still remember the phone number... But they had an incredible CD-ROM collection that included SLS Linux.. something way early where you had to partition and format using the minix demo).. But basically with my 2400 baud modem that would get me disconnected anywhere else I could download Linux.. which was awesome! .. Back then trying to ftp to a VAX then run sz was... such a lost cause. Plust they had a lot of doom wads, kind of funny for who ran it.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- funderbolt · 2013-02-23 01:36 > Plust they had a lot of doom wads, kind of funny for who ran it.. You had to upload =something= so that you could download other stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- derfherdez · 2013-02-23 01:52 yeah... like more doom wads from the internet..my favorite one changed the exploding barrels for macintosh classics... :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lurkastan · 2013-02-23 05:03 Maybe we should do a "Let's Play" thing like /r/MUD does...every month we could pick a BBS for the community to check out and post comments about. Some boards could sorely use the infusion of traffic (OK, maybe ALL of them could...except for a few that run MajorMUD). As for my favorite boards, I'd go with Cyberia, Quicksilver, and Titantic at the moment. Cyberia (telnet://cyberia.darktech.org) has a sysop who writes original door games and mods using the Mystic Programming Language, the language that's built into the Mystic BBS software. Something new is always happening on there...I think the latest thing is a text files section. Good selection of message areas from a variety of nets too. Quicksilver (telnet://informationware.com) is another BBS run by someone who is actively working on new door games. His latest game, Ringworld, is still under development, and he's actively looking for beta testers. He also has a really customized version of Wilderlands II running. Another reason I go there to keep up on what's happening in the MajorBBS scene since his board is a member of WorldLink. Titantic (telnet://ttb.slyip.com) is the home base for Renegade and Metronet, but what I like best about it is its incredible array of door games. Every now and then I run into an obscure door game on some other board and think to myself, "There's no way that's on Titantic...I'd have noticed it before." When I go to actually check it out for myself, though, it turns out it really is on Titantic under door game menu #399 or so (that's a slight exaggeration). As for advertising the subreddit, you could post about it in the Advertising echoes of message networks like DOVEnet, Agoranet, etc. Could also try to get links from the BBS Corner, BBS-Scene, and other BBS-related web sites too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tribute · 2013-02-23 20:29 That's a good idea. I'll try something like that out next month.
