How to view ANSI art files on Linux and/or OSX? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- treetrouble · 2012-05-27 19:04 I have a bunch of old school BBS-related ANSI art that I'd like to check out. "cat" in OSX seems to get the colors right but not the upper ASCII characters. I believe the files were encoded in DOS as per the usual at the time. Any idea how to configure this? (or convert the files to another format?) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- treetrouble · 2012-05-27 19:34 follow up: I wound up using [DOSBox](http://www.dosbox.com), it worked as-is using the DOS *type* command ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-05-30 01:37 > Any idea how to configure this? (or convert the files to another format?) Actually, yes. My terminal emulator [qodem](http://qodem.sf.net) can do this for you, using any version since 0.2-ish (I think). Create a phonebook entry using the LOCAL method and ANSI emulation and CP437 codepage (or whatever the files are in - CP850, 1250, etc.). "Connect" and qodem will spawn a shell, then type 'cat filename" to see it in its DOS-era glory. To see it yourself you'll need a UTF-8 capable terminal - Terminal.app on OSX does nicely, as do most modern terminals (uxterm, konsole, gnome-terminal) under Linux. To convert your files to another format, you can open a capture file and use HTML as the save format. This is actually how I converted the Qmodem^TM user's guide into HTML format on the qodem homepage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dedc · 2012-08-30 13:01 https://github.com/jcs/ansiterm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- snoozerd · 2012-08-31 19:01 http://picoe.ca/products/pablodraw/
