How do multiplayer door games work in general? reddit / bbs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- run_bbs_door_games · 2012-02-17 03:39 I'm new to BBSes and I would like to run one with a couple of MUDs for my users to enjoy. The problem is that apparently Tournament LORD costs $200 for a 256 player game! Why is it so expensive? I've found a website with a bunch of doors and utilities, but I've seen all kinds of websites explaining how these incredibly old games cost $25 or up to $200. Why? What's going on here? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shogun333 · 2012-02-17 08:26 I'm quite sure there would be free (as in beer and otherwise) ones that you can get. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- run_bbs_door_games · 2012-02-17 18:02 I found out that DoorMUD was released by the creator for free with a keygen. But I know what you mean, and I haven't found any. I'm just assuming the developers are charging out the ass for no real reason. If these games all run locally, why does it cost so much for a key? I thought the cost was because it was paying for nodes/bandwidth or something. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-05-07 02:03 back then people were expecting to charge access to the BBSes to play these games, so it was all a part of some big money making operation.... Needless to say the internet happened and it all basically fell apart... Much like commercial UNIX .. Anyways the whole thing works via 'shared files' via file locking. There is some SDK out there, 'opendoors' or something like that, with a compiler and time/effort you can make your own.....
