Is it common for companies that use BSD to have Linux running also? reddit / BSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Middlewarian · 2023-02-28 04:08 I'm aware of how FreeBSD has some support for running Linux binaries. I guess for FreeBSD the question is do they enable that support and/or run Linux separtely? This page: [https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/linuxemu/](http s://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/linuxemu/) says: Some Linux-specific operating system features are not yet supported; this mostly happens with functionality specific to hardware or related to system management, such as cgroups or namespaces. \--------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- I'm wondering if there's support for io\_uring. It being somewhat new and large, I would guess the answer is no. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermaden · 2023-02-28 13:02 Netflix for example uses FreeBSD for streaming/storage while their application services run on Linux (from what I know/have heard). Also all companies that I was in touch with or worked for that run/build on top on FreeBSD they also run Linux on some services. If you need something that only exists for Linux, you deploy on Linux. The compat layer's more for running binaries if a program hasn't been ported yet, and is recommended to restrict to a jail as well. Haven't looked at `io_uring` support/analogues.
